A LOT has been written recently on Abdul Sattar Edhi, one of the greatest philanthropists Pakistan and the world have ever seen. A man of immense dignity, he devoted his life to the social uplift of those in need.

His only wealth was to serve the people, to provide them with food, shelter and healthcare. Where others turned a blind eye, Edhi was there to bear the burden entirely on his back to ensure his vision of a country where no person is left hungry and impoverished.

He and his loving wife, Bilquis, walked the talk and, therefore, won the respect of millions. They lived an austere life, devoting all their time and resources to the welfare of others.

Because of him, drivers of Edhi ambulances strive to ensure that no person is denied access to medical treatment, regardless of the circumstances.

His staff was devoted to and obeyed him. Public trust of the Edhi was such that once, when he personally travelled through Sharea Faisal collecting donations, virtually every commuter made a contribution. People knew that, in his hands, their donations would go to a good cause.

The federal government should install a statue of this legendary Pakistani figure, wearing the same old slippers he was known to wear for years. It could be installed at Merewether Tower, the gateway to the KPT in Karachi.

It provides yet more proof that the undergirding logic of public authority in Pakistan is legal and extra-legal coercion rather than legitimised consent.
