Actor Nadeem Jafri robbed in Karachi, demands security

KARACHI: Actor and TV host Nadeem Jafri was robbed in Karachi's Gulshan-i-Iqbal neighbourhood on Thursday and has demanded security after the incident, police said.
Two young men approached Jafri near his house in the morning and snatched his cell phone from him on gunpoint, SP Gulshan Fahad Ahmed told Dawn.
Jafri, who starred in Pakistani production 'Wrong No.', remained safe in the incident, the police official said.
Fakhr-e-Alam, the former chairman of the Sindh Board of Film Censors claimed in a tweet that as the robbers were leaving after the mugging, there was an exchange of fire which Jafri narrowly escaped. Police denied this claim however, saying "there was no firing during the incident".
A First Information Report (FIR) was registered in Gulshan police station on Jafri's complaint. The celebrity demanded security after the incident.
Scores of actors, singers and producers earlier this week demanded that the Sindh government provide them security because they feel threatened after the recent murder of renowned qawwal Amjad Sabri.
The artists, mostly associated with the television industry and led by singer Fakhr-e-Alam, submitted an application to the Defence police station SHO which warned that they would hold the provincial government responsible if any member of the fraternity came under attack.

Nadeem Jaferi or Fakhre Aalam are individuals like millions more on the street. Cricketes were also robbed on these streets. There is hardly a house in Karachi whose members were not robbed. And if these 'artists of sort' demand security - all others can.

Why this is a new, nearly all living in Karachi have their mobiles snatched at least once. People budget this expense at least once a year. Saying that robbers did not robbed you because you are an actor, they robbed because they saw an opportunity. So relax you did not receive any special status from robbers, so please do not expect special attention from government.

@NEUTRAL - agreed they are normal people like any other. Their demand is not as much on 'equal security' but on 'equal vulnerability'. The proportion of police headcount and security expense on the 'VIPs' is not justified compared to whats available for the rest of the city.

Karachi is like a goose which lays golden eggs, the only interest of other stake holders is how to get as much as golden eggs. I don't know how many operation had been conducted in Karachi since 1990 results are same and how many more will be conducted in future still result will be same.

Law and order situation will drastically improve when we have community police, knowing the people of residents and have awareness of culture will bring such issues to eliminate once for all. PPL in security agencies or in police having background of other province have no interest, sympathy to ppls of Karachi. Karachi & Hyderabad should be a separate province.

just because he is a celeb he gets to demand for security. I have been mugged 3 times in 4 years. Dont i get to demand for the same. What makes his or any other life more valuable them mine. I support the fact that we all are equals and even the ministers should not be given this protocol but i do not support actors / singers or anyone else getting protocol...no one deserve protocol if we...the tax payers (each and everyone of us) are not treated equally.

Next PM would be either Imran Khan , Nawaz Sharif or Shahbaz Sharif. None of them have been to Karachi for a long time. All of them visit London more often than Karachi even though Karachi is the biggest and port city of Pakistan. What is happening is very predictable.

Sindh government needs to wake up from its deep slumber and devise strategy to root out mafias from Karachi. Also, artists' community lead by Fakhr-e-Alam need not politicize the matter. Not a single Karachiite has been spared of this Lawlessness, snatching at gun-point syndrome over the last few years.

Street crimes are so rampant in Karachi that Karachiites do not bother to report to police. I had an experience of being robbed on street in the precinct of soldier bazar police station,then after some time on Mai Kolarchi,then again since I was careful a failed attempt by robber within precinct of Garden Police station, I did not report to police,because it's useless. The magnitude of street crimes is so vast in Karachi,that it could not be contained by the current police which is already politicized,incompetent,and illiterate as well.Ofcourse situation could be changed if educated youth on merit be employed in police system,and each street,each lane,and each road should have latest high resolution cameras,like in London. Then only each criminal could be identified and nabbed.

In presence of the rangers and police who claim peace restoration seem to be helpless. Ironically the snatchers, looters, muggers, kidnappers and killers come from other provinces and the people responsible for security belong to other provinces as well. Then the question is who will restore peace in Karachi, and the answer is only local people and local security personnel can maintain peace as only they can protect their city.
