ICC Rankings: Poor ODI record takes Pakistan to ninth position

Pakistan dropped down to the ninth position in the ODI Team rankings released by the International Cricket Council (ICC) on Wednesday after an annual update saw results from 2012-13 scrapped, while results from 2014-15 been reduced to a weighting of 50 per cent.
Since 2014, Pakistan have managed to win just three out of the ten ODI series they played, with victories coming against Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka last year while they were eliminated from the 2015 World Cup in after losing to Australia in the quarter-final.
Pakistan’s famous 3-0 ODI debacle against Bangladesh also took place in this duration after Azhar Ali replaced veteran Misbah-ul-Haq as the ODI captain following the World Cup exit.
World Cup 2015 finalists Australia and New Zealand have retained the top two positions.
Australia, who won their fifth World Cup title in Melbourne last year, are now sitting on 124 points after dropping two points to lead New Zealand by 11 points.
South Africa moved into the third position, having swapped places with India while West Indies replaced Pakistan as the eighth placed team.
Other sides to gain following the annual update include sixth-ranked England (103, up two), seventh-ranked Bangladesh (98, up one), eighth-ranked West Indies (88, up two), 10th-ranked Afghanistan (51, up four) and 11th-ranked Zimbabwe (47, up two).
A significant date on the ICC events calendar is 30 September 2017, which is the rankings cut-off date for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019.
The host, England, and the seven next highest-ranked sides on the ICC ODI Team Rankings on 30 September 2017 will qualify directly for cricket’s biggest event, while the bottom four ODI ranked sides will join the top sides from the ICC World Cricket League in the ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifier 2018 to fight for the two remaining positions.
Although there will be another ODI team rankings annual update prior to this cut-off date, it is significant that from now on the results of all ODIs that will affect qualification will be weighted at 100 per cent whereas matches played between May 2014 and April 2016 will by then be weighted at only 50 per cent.
All the teams bunched together in the middle of the table will have to win as many matches as possible in the forthcoming season, knowing it will help ensure direct qualification for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019, which will be staged from 30 May to 15 July in the United Kingdom. — ICC

The PCB is trying hard to disturb the test squad as well by eliminating the batsman with highest test run rate YK. PCB just ignored him when he became the leading test run scorer of pak.

Well, nothing astonishing there. Pak recent performance in Odis & T20s has been pathetic. Players have no fear whatsoever. Politics & grouping all around. Majority of the officials are uneducated and corrupt & literally have no sense of cricket. As long as Sheheryar & Sethi kind of officials are around us, we should not hope for anything better.

@Faisal , well we are going to champions trophy. Mourn about it if you want to. Pakistan have a tough year ahead with tours of England and Australia. We can definalty win against West Indies in UAE in all formats but need to win against England in ODIs which will be some effort.

Pakistan should stop nepotism and corruption in selection and running PCB affairs. Selection should be on set performance only, during last one year. PCB should not shy away from kicking bad performer, giving chance to new players (on basis of domestic performance over a year). In my opinion, performance over last one year (or last 6 matches) should be:
Test player should maintain average 40 against good teams playing away and over 45 against low ranking teams or when playing home.
As for ODI, average should be at least 40 and SR at least 80 (or Ave d SR = 3500) and at lower order, Ave x SR should be over 3000.
For T20 ... Ave x SR should be over at least 3000.
Fielding should be included in performance too. Similarly, bowler criteria should be set too.
There should be no fixed match fee. Players match fees should be linked to their performance, worked out for each match.
No ifs an buts, any player do not fulfil criteria should be replaced by new domestic player.

Well I don't expect any significant performance from our team in time to come and there is every possibility which won't be a surprise, if our team will play qualifying round for world cup, there is one person who ruins our cricket solely by his ill gross management, PM. Though I am not pessimist but also see Inzi role as cheif selector fruitless in long run. We need to fix our infrastructure by providing grounds/facilities to our youth,develop cricket in schools, colleges and universities de-politicize the game forming an independent PCB from the influence of incompetents, bringing ONLY deserving & competent people in PCB and lot lot more reforms holistically. No doubt we have no dearth of passion, talent and love for the game in our beloved motherland.

This looks similar to Pakistan's demise in hockey, it was slow and painful and we never recovered. Pakistan cricket is going the same way and there is no way to turn this around unfortunately. RIP Pak Cricket, we barely knew ye!

That's the gift to Pakistan courtesy Waqar Younus who brought down the team ranking from 4 to 9 in two years. Question needs to be asked on what basis he was appointed selector. His previous stint as coach for IPL- Hyderabad sun risers resulted in Hyderabad at the bottom of the table.
His stint in WC outings. 1992- Waqar was injured. 1996- his last two overs against India in Quarter-final gave 42 runs and the cause for defeat. 1999- Waqar played only one match against Bangladesh which Pakistan lost. 2003 Waqar was made captain and his 8 over for 83 runs in match against India gave India the match. We all know how he performed when he was coach of Pakistan for the first time from 2010-2011. shameful attitude of players in England and defeat against India in the 2011 WC.

I am still hopeful of Pakistan coming to first 4 in coming years. For this selection process has to be overhauled and CEO type of people who are running the show must be shown the door. I feel pity for country of Imran, Miadad, Zaheer Abbas relegating to such a sorry state.

Because No one comes to Pakistan. Even now a days playing in Parks has become risky. We do not want to go India and Want them play in location of our choice. If some team does not want to come we talk as if we do not need them. Afghanistan Does not have such ego problem. If Pakistan does not start tours and accepting visitors like normal Countries do Cricket grows backward and decay

@AK This is the first test for Inzimam and if he keeps Azhar Ali as captain nothing will change. Younus Khan and Misbah may be asked to take back their retirements and make one of them captain of ODI. Pakistan needs Afridi in the ODI team in England. But they must drop Azhar Ali and Mohammad Hafeez.
