Peter Moores turns down Pakistan coaching job

Former England coach Peter Moores has turned down an opportunity to succeed Waqar Younis as the new Pakistan coach, the 53-year-old Englishman said.

Coaching Pakistan, traditionally a fractious bunch of talented individuals, is one of the toughest jobs in international cricket and Younis stepped down a disillusioned man last month after the team's poor World Twenty20 display in India.

Younis' exit has forced the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) into fresh head-hunting and Moores said he declined a chance to return to international coaching after England sacked him for the second time last year.

“I was hugely flattered to be approached,” Moores, currently a consultant with Nottinghamshire, told ESPNcricinfo.

“And I was very tempted by such a prestigious role with an exciting team.

“But having thought about it deeply, I don't think it is the right time for me or my family. I have committed myself to a consultancy role with Nottinghamshire and I am enjoying spending time with my kids as they grow up.”

After the team's woeful campaigns both in the Asia Cup and the World Twenty20, the PCB has embarked on rebuilding the side, appointing former cricket captain Inzamam-ul-Haq as the new chief selector.

Obviously it will not be an easy job to find a real good head coach for Pakistan cricket team and after finding one then making him successful with the team which is distrained for so long...the tragedy will be to go for the second choice or number two level coach because that will not serve the purpose...lets hope for the best..Inshahallah...

lol @ Pakistan cricket situation. We need our own Pakistan cricket legends to come back to Pakistan cricket and take over PCB. These Legends of Pakistan made name and fame by being part of cricket and when now they are famous some one is politician and others are businessmen and taking advantage of their big fame and name. but do you think its fair with PAKISTAN??? NO NO NO !!! Stop doing politics/businesses. PAKISTAN cricket has of potential ! The Legends should take over PCB and CRICKET their business. and when Pakistan team becomes number 1 over all. These legends will be more legendary and more rich !!!

Who the heck is Peter Moore?! why we approached some no name cricket person for this role? shame on PCB . With the presence of Miandad, Asif Iqbal, Majid Khan to name a few... we contact this no-name no gooder of a cricket person who played or maybe played for counties in England !! just because of the England tour?

Working in a troubled country is one thing and working under people like Najam Sethi and Shehryar Khan is another. Not only this, there are players like Ahmad Shahzad and Umar Akmal who make coaching job a living nightmare. Any foreigner with a sane mind will never go for this job.

What's wrong in hiring a local coach, after all hasn't Indian bowling attack benefited a lot from Wasim Akram's tips and guidance? As far as PCB is in a quandary, things won't change for Pakistani cricket overall.

I don't want to be seen as being critical for the sake of it! However the PCB and its advisers cant even get this right! You make an offer to someone who you have done some research and assessment on as to whether he is in synch with the culture , system and has previously shown some indication of positive attitude towards Pak cricket. Mr Moores to me does not fit the bill, I do t want to elaborate, but sitting from outside it is obvious. More concerning is the fact these guys don't see it. God bless pak cricket!!!

So Aqaib and Moshin are right that foreign coach will be preferred. What is an offer everyone understands. So the people at helm of affairs at PCB are on for a foreign coach. Peter has declined so the race is for Foreigh Coach period.

What's the point in hiring a foreign coach when you have ample opportunity and past world class players who can contribute a lot in guiding cricket team. If any individual player has a problem getting coaching from a particular coach, then that player does not deserve a place in national team.

The Pakistani team should be flown to the West Indies for six months to train under coach Sir Viv Richards. Not sure if any foreign coach would want to come here and stay

One reason i think of hiring a foreign coach is discipline issue, local coaches however good have their Favoritism issue and still embroil in some sort of politics.

First the security situation in Pakistan should be improved only then approach foreign coaches. How do you expect a foreign coach to come work here when your own PSL is not been conducted at home?

@ZAK I don't think Pakistan is in desperate need to hire a foreign coach, this team, if it wants to improve and perform, can do so with a local coach. The reasons behind Pakistan's despicable performance are many, including management of the PCB, and their not paying attention to domestic cricket and having more stadiums in Pakistan. Even if security is improved, there are many areas PCB should pay attention to.

I just can't understand why a fuss is being made on someone's refusing a job, someone whose name most people did not even know about. I think most of the comments here lack seriousness, understanding and are just being made for the fun of it. Hasn't Pakistani team been managed in the past by local coaches, actually the reason and the fun some commentators are seeking in, is that Pakistan is such a pathetic country where terrorism is occurring on every street, the reality is not what it seems to be. I think Indians will never get that there is no competition between India and Pakistan, and contrary to what most Indians think that it has to downgrade Pakistan in every segment and area. It is sad to realize and see this thing. I hope this excessive nationalism regarding Pakistan from India will end one day, let's wait for that day.

Why PCB is looking for a Foreign Coach when there are so many legends in Pakistan who have played and brought a name to the country? Simply WHY! PCB itself needs a Re-Organization and the Government MUST take a close look at it and bring in legend Cricketers for revival of Pakistan Cricket.

Pakistan should approach Viv Richards as he seems to have some sympathy for Pakistan. Not many good coaches will take this job and you have to go for tier 2 or 3 coach.
