LAHORE: Intelligence agencies on Monday released a student of the Punjab University after his links with the banned Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) could not be established.

Attique Afridi, a student of the university’s Hailey College of Commerce, allegedly tortured a fellow student over a minor issue last Friday. But when he was presented before senior officials of the university, Afridi declared TTP’s Nek Muhammad and Baitullah Mehsud as his leaders and used threatening tone against them (officials).

“Attique Afridi is released by the intelligence agencies after interrogation. His alleged links with the TTP could not be established,” PU spokesman Khurram Shahzad told Dawn. He said the chief security officer had not followed the standard operating procedures (SOPs) to inform the university’s vice chancellor about handing over the student to the agencies.

Mr Shahzad said the student in question had used ‘threatening tone’ against the PU officials in a fit of anger. “However, the university will not spare any extremist elements on the campus,” he said.
