GUJRAT: The construction of much-awaited road to Hafiz Hayat Campus of the University of Gujrat from the main Jalalpur Jattan road finally begins.

District Coordination Officer Liaqat Ali Chattha and PML-N MNA Nawabzada Mazhar Ali Khan inaugurated the road construction work on Wednesday.

The work on 2.5km portion of the link road had been delayed for long despite repeated announcements and commitments made by the senior government functionaries, including the chief minister and his son MNA Hamza Shahbaz during their visits to the varsity over the past three years.

According to UoG administration, the road would facilitate some 18,000 students daily in reaching their respective institutions.

The provincial government had released Rs198 million for the purpose during last fiscal (2014-15). But due to “technical issues” the work could not be started.

The DCO told reporters the road would now be widened up to 24 feet, besides construction of eight-feet shoulders on its both sides. He hoped the road would be completed before the stipulated time period of 90 days. He said the carpeted road would be stretched up to the Defence Road, linking Kharian and Jalalpur Jattan.
