No intention of stepping down: Waqar Younis

Pakistan head coach Waqar Younis has rubbished reports in the local media claiming he was ready to step down from his post in the wake of a disastrous tour of New Zealand.
New Zealand hammered Pakistan 2-1 in the T20 series before winning the first of three ODI matches convincingly on Monday. With the second ODI lost to rain, Pakistan held a team bonding session, which was termed in some sections of the media as a tense affair after Waqar threatened to quit over a “lack of trust between the management and the players”.
But the 44-year-old former paceman, who is in his second stint as Pakistan coach, said it was 'unfortunate' that the media was indulging in irresponsible reporting just as the team was getting ready for the World Twenty20.
“I have no intention of stepping down. It has become a trend in the media to cook up such things when the team is not performing well.”
Waqar said Pakistan were at a 'crossroads' and did not need any distractions before the their upcoming challenges.
The former captain said the third ODI between Pakistan and New Zealand would be crucial for his team.
“The tour has not turned out as well as we had imagined but New Zealand is always tough. In all the games we were guilty of not finishing well when we got in a good position.”
Pakistan head coach Grant Flower also urged his team to 'use their brains' after gaining the upper hand.
“It doesn’t seem like we’re learning from our mistakes - that’s the disappointing part,” he said.
“It’s one thing losing, but you’re paid to do a job and if you keep making the same mistakes, there are going to be questions asked.”
Pakistan will take on New Zealand in the third and final ODI of the series on January 31 and Azhar Ali's side would be hoping the rain stays away.

Actually if it rids of Waqar I am all for it.
Anyone seen Waqar's captaincy or heard his commentary will know he's a very poor strategist - the primary skill required to be an international coach. Not only that look at the pathetic condition of Pakistan bowling and it's not because of lack of talent.

I would love the whole Selection team to be sacked with immediate effect for not doing there job and providing Mediocre players. I would like Shehayar to go as he is defending all of them. I hold the quality of players playing as the main culprit instead of the coach.

who will intention to resigned, bcs in Australia to get salary of US$ 16K plus 5 first class a/tickets, medical & 5 star hotel and daily allowance your performce in T20, ODI is disastrous tour of New Zealand, Bangla Wash, England clear cut defeat, no Pakistani want you to coach, even poor Pak bowling, you should teach them yorker, leg cutter, googly etc, but Pak bowling is worse, Wahab has hit 3 sexes in one over by tail end NZ. PCB have to speak with you and you honor resign and save Pakistan you are very expensive coach in Pakistan you have some ego problem with players, not treating the human being and dictatorial treatment. Pls say good bye to Pak team. We need pure Made in Pak coach not DESI Australian highly costly.

who they gonna replace him with? No other viable option. We need someone who is hard eenough to command the players request like Sir Alex Ferguson. Who can match Sir Alex in cricket. I would prefer hard coach who got the gift of the gab and will say it as it is and if that includes swearing in English in dressing room, so be it.
Pakistan has been employing soft coaches. We need no nonsense coach.
I still believe that players shud only get average Pakistani monthly wage. And the rest as win bonus or performance/win related. This will shake them all up as then they will play to earn and win.
Then maybe they will realise the pride and honour of the Pakistan shirt. If they don't accept, i'm sure Pakistan has enough talent that will jump at the chance to play for 20,000rs a month.

Waqar's performance has been very poor consistently. Certainly he wouldn't like to leave high paying job. PCB should link the contractual agreement with performance which is disappointing. Please ask him to leave. The nation cannot afford to have such an incompetent coach. I see him part of the problem but no way a solution to address the detoriating situiatin of Pakistani cricket. Mercy please.

Why would he leave a 15k dollars per month job which also has perks of roaming few countries for free. It's not like this Pakistan team will change and results will be better anyway if he resigns. He knows the potential of team is at peak right now and it can never be better even if reborn woolmer and Gary kirstin both combined to coach Pakistan for years for years Pakistan was called unpredictable which is apolite word for inconsistent, in organised , fluke team

Pakistani culture no body goes with respect in political Govt. Similarly the Chairman of Pak team is non-cricketer with experience of foreign office & teaching, unfortunately you fooling him and Pak Nation, we overseas Pakistan sending hard currencies foreign exchange to our beloved country and you taking all your salary US$ 16,000/- do you get in Sydney this salary ?? believe me not, I did research on Australia salary structure which between ASD 2500-3000 image how you production poor performance, of bowler and batting. you r not qualified coach and not completed level of courses. This is case of present modern cricket in the world which you did not played, in the absence of any education & qualification coaching degree the result is in mirror ? so you want to resign an blessing to Pak team,

You have no intention, yes always defeats is your result, you have to take care of your production is low and salary are high and higher defeats result day by day increased you never think, intention to this RS 16,00,000/- p/month salary plus perk you are in Pakistan on R&R vacation (Rest & Recreation). If no intention than Pakistan team is loser in 3rd ODI in NZ, Asian Cup and W/c T20 in March. COME ON quickly to yes intention before they fire you.

Like each and every job, there are goals, and expectation from the country, management, and everyone involved in any kind of work or performance. If players and or coaches are not performing to the expectation, then they should be sacked. It does not makes sense to wait too long, and then the time will be gone. PCB needs overhauling, and then you need to get the right coaches, and players to get quality performance. People of Pakistan deserve better from their coaches & players. So please all the coaches & players & PCB show some quality performance, if not then take an exit route. Thanks.

Once the team has been so bitterly beaten t once, twice or even thrice then any coach or selector with little bit of moral conscious had himself resigned simply because he has not been hired and paid very hefty money to earn defeats but regretfully it is not so in our case and that is why Waqar has announced that he is not tendering resignation. in 2 years Waqar could not even learn any tricks to his bowlers so what else can you expect of him. He should at least be relieved of his services in the limited over cricket and be replaced with some Australian who believes in attacking cricket of today.

When he was a captain we lost the world cup. We lost world cup again when he was a coach. Now we are losing most of the matches. Mohsin Khan was a coach just before him and he built the team very well and Pakistan started matches because of him and Misba.

Every coach have goals, expectation, management,projection, in every org. Mgr have budget, goal, but we did not see any progress. If players or coaches are not perform to the expectation, then they should be sacked or drop. PCB needs overhauling change coach & Captain & bring a Qualified all level courses passed coach who have experience of ODI, T20, quality & motivation, treating friendly to players, result oriented ur result is ZERO, in ODI & T20 in both formats start from W/cp 2015 to NZ 1st ODI lost, Bangla, England you have put Pak team on ZAMB or Napali level cricket. Before you come to press / Media wht do you think ? Any justify for ur Coaching.Pak team on (A) level now we r below minus C level team. U need one way ticket to home. let leave Pakistan team on the shoulders of good coaches, in PCB there r no cricketer to judge your performance.

@Uzma , yes Uzma , You are right , People work for living and so does Big ego driven called Stars of Pakistan Cricket team ( Players or officials alike ) , They do not fade away as they do not see the writings on the wall for them/their position COS they are stars So Why Do I resign Even if my contribution does not bring any fruits to the team , I have been Super Star hence I have to stay on irrespective of what the results are . Waqar as a Bowler was one such person , He had to be shown the door ( his aim was to get to 400 tests wickets come what may , eventually the PCB had enough of his pedestrian work as a strike bowler and he had to be dropped ) . Now the same Waqar , has contributed nothing in the winning formation of the team he coaches YET , He would not Resign cos this the most lucrative job he can have , so sooner or later , he will have to be shown the door Once again ... that is the story of Pakistani stars , They do not read the writings on the walls , have to be pushed.

@ZAIDI, Iqbal Hadi : Have to resigned with further delay, if he refuse, termination immediate effect. If PCB chairman are unable to take decision than PM Nawaz should fire Chairman Sharyar, Coach Waqar and his coaching staff and ODI Captain Azhar without further delay. Quick action please PCB.

He is right. He should not step down. Instead we need to fire his a**. He is the most pathetic coach Pakistan ever had. He has no management and coaching skills. I agree he was a great player but when it comes to coaching he has not done any good for the team. PCB made two mistakes. Appointing Waqar younis as coach and Azhar Ali as captain. A leader should lead by example and players should look upto him but doesn't seem the case with Azhar Ali. We don't need our players to be treated like kids and always threatened. Its unfortunate that they couldn't nourish talented players we have produced. I would give coaching stint back to Mohsin Khan and make Shoaib Malik the captain.

I don't think that coach got such a huge role in winning matches in cricket. It is not like football where basically coach has a huge role. Players are more important. I would criticize players rather than the coach.

Why would he resign? He has the ideal job, no holds him accountable for team's poor performance. He will just keep on earning his huge paycheck and make a few statements like we need to be better, we made mistake etc. He does not have any control over the players, he needs to be more assertive and make players sit out if they don't perform. Select the team on merit and result will improve.

Najam Sethi and Shaheryar don't want Waqar to quit at this stage. They are keeping him as the punching bag and hiding behind him to save their own skins. If Waqar quits then people will go after PCB higher management ... so Waqar will be in the fold for a long time.

I don't think it matters who stays or who goes. In my openion there is a lack of talent now in this modern era of cricket. I am sure batsman tried ther best but just could not do the job because they just dont have the technique to handle the situation, it is just like you need a PhD to resolve a complex issue and you send High School graduate with a lot of experience, dedication, hard work BUT he just does not have the intelectual capability to resolve the issue.
Look what happened in Hockey - the Pak team just cannot handle the technical superioraty of the oppenonts.
To resolve this issue it needs grass root level changes, and ofcoures at Management level as well which is a seperate subject all together.
Good Luck Pak team - i am sure you can win here and there, once in a while but consistantly - Sorry not in this shape.

Courtesy 20-20 players have improved drastically. Unfortunately, our domestic T-20 is pretty frail. Not playing IPL and neither invited to play competitive cricket elsewhere, our talent pool has regressed. Attitude of our players does not help either. Waqar surely should be removed from ODI & T-20 roles. His expertise are next to nothing in the modern format of the game. Someone like Wasim, Rameez or a consultant like Sanjay Manjrekar is useful
