LAHORE: The divisional administration in collaboration with the Punjab Food Authority and artists inaugurated on Friday its model pushcart pilot project and distributed 30 handbarrows among the vendors of Fatehgarh bazaar and Karim Block market in Iqbal Town.
“The model pushcarts have been provided under the chief minister’s vision to ensure hygienic food for the public,”
Adviser to the Chief Minister Khwaja Ahmad Hassaan said at the ceremony. He said many more handbarrows would be provided to the vendors in the regular phases of the project.
Commissioner Abdullah Sumbal said model pushcarts would improve the cart culture and beautification of the Lahore city. He said in the next phase, 150 more pushcarts would be provided to vendors. He said that pushcarts would only be used to sell food items and a steering committee would judge performance and popularity of the project time to time.

Do they have 'headlights'? I have seen people pushing carts on the road in the early morning fog in Lahore. They're virtually invisible.

How would these pushcarts ensure hygienic food? The hygiene of the food does not depend on the colour and design of the pushcart. It depends largely on the cleanliness of the seller, the utensils used, the cook, the contents of the food and most importantly the environment ( free from dust, flies and smoke etc.) where the food is being sold. If the campaign addresses all these issues, it is commendable, if not, this is going to be yet another gimmick of Punjab Government and nothing else.

Rabia, as per the safety & security I agree with your suggestion that those push carts should be equipped with lights or reflectors in case of foggy weather.
A good initiative from the Govt for the small range sole proprietors to maintain a business to assist a living! I hope those carts wont charge much... :-) Thank you!

A suggestion: Please make sure that the vendors are also well dressed,
at the least in a clean dress, use clean utensils and have clean nails.

Do something out of Lahore as well. There are 35 more districts in Punjab other than Lahore. CM always act like a mayor of Lahore. Its really deplorable indeed.

Another gimmick by noon league. I will comment after one month. The items displayed would come from same wholesale vendors who have a reputation. Hence watch out what you eat.

A great idea much needed for the streets of Lahore and Karachi and one hopes food hygiene training will form part of allocation procedure. Unless carts are motorised, the Government should offer a permanent location charging business hawker rates to allow food and packaging waste cleared frequently. Each hawker be given a licence for a short period at a time so as to maintain high standards.

Good Step....These people also need to be trained about cleanliness and hygiene.
Training should be made compulsory....This ensures good business ethics and other matters related to it.
Even in Europe..countries like Greece and other east European countries they have push carts selling snacks etc which are extremely clean.
Push Carts business should be made legal and must be regulated...this will provide earning opportunities to a large number of unemployed.

Th key is: The people who serve the rest: House-hold helpers, street vendors, taxi drivers, etc. --will not deliver quality service, unless their own standard of living is raised sufficiently. If a person has to make do in a bucket of water in day (if lucky), how can that person deliver hygiene to others?

@Adnan Aziz . Excuse me. Why are you bringing common sense into this. Let the Punjab govt take this initiative. Maybe they believe the vendors will suddenly start using clean utensils, quality food anf keep themselves clean all because of the new colourful carts.

cart user need elementary TV based public heath education also ...may be a condition
they need to do a three four days course in some health facility .

Everyone forgetting one key element when serving food, "Temperature" of food whether hot or cold.Although these carts are a great idea,they are not enough,the only thing changes with these carts is basically the look,they look cleaner,but when it comes to serving food that is clean,properly stored,and most importantly,served at the right temperature,these carts do not offer it.As usual,the Punjab government has a good idea but its half baked.
