LANDI KOTAL: As many as ten oil tankers carrying fuel supplies to Nato forces in Afghanistan reached Torkham border here on Monday amid tight security, resuming the service over a year after its suspension.

Officials at Torkham while requesting anonymity told Dawn the tankers with no apparent Nato related marking on them reached the border at around midday and were later parked near the crossing point for necessary checking.

Earlier, the political administration had provided Khasadar and Levies escort to the trucks’ convoy after its entry into Khyber Agency from Peshawar district on Monday morning.

Officials were, however, reluctant to disclose the exact timing of the oil tankers crossing into Afghanistan as the vehicles had not crossed the border till Monday evening.

Fuel supplies to Nato forces in Afghanistan via the Torkham border remained suspended for over a year after an announcement that the foreign troops would withdraw from the country. Militants have, in the past, attacked hundreds of Nato containers and oil tankers passing through the Khyber Pass.

However, the security officials in recent months have claimed clearing the area of such elements.
