Amir on brink of Pakistan comeback after being included in PCB camp

LAHORE: Mohammad Amir's bid to make a comeback to the national side was given a major boost after the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) inducted the fast bowler in a fitness training camp for 26 players which also includes T20 captain Shahid Afridi.

The 26 players, picked by the selection committee and approved by Shaharyar Khan, are likely to form the core of Pakistan's squad for next year's World Twenty20 and the latest development suggests Amir could well be part of that group.

“The main objective of the camp is to improve the overall physical fitness of all players and to enhance the technical aspect of each player’s game and to prepare them for the upcoming international events,” the PCB said in a statement.

“Shaharyar Khan, Chairman PCB has approved the names of 26 players picked up by the PCB National Selection Committee for the fitness camp.”

Amir's inclusion in the training camp is likely to fast-track his move up to the national side after Pakistan's bowling stocks were clearly found wanting in the recent ODI and T20 series against England.

And the 23-year-old vowed to put in the hard yards if selected for Pakistan.

“Will try my best to give 100% to my country,” he tweeted after being included in the training camp.

Amir was also on the brink of selection in the Pakistan 'A' side earlier this month but strong opposition from some of the current players put his return in national colours after the 2010 spot-fixing scandal on the back burner.

The left-armer already has the backing of coach Waqar Younis, who said Amir deserved a second chance.

Waqar had a detailed discussion on Amir's future with PCB chairman Shaharyar Khan earlier in the month, and said “we are all on the same page” about the young fast bowler's future in international cricket.

“He (Amir) has served his punishment and he deserves to come back in the (cricketing) community and enhance his profession,” Waqar said.

I honestly dont understand the problem with Sheharyar khan!! It was only earlier this month when he commented that Aamir is not yet ready for Pakistan return and now all of a sudden he is inducted into the training camp. This is extremely confusing and very contradictory and also very frustrating for the followers of Pakistan Cricket.

Aamir has proven beyond doubt that he still has the same bite in his bowling as he had just before being framed. Get him in the side regardless of what professor or principal (Hafeez & Ramiz) have to say - he has served the punishment for his deeds and it's not fair to ignore his talent and keep him out. Aamir can certainly uplift the current toothless bowling attack and give much needed confidence to likes of Wahab, Junaid, Irfan, Imran and Rahat to perform better.

Chairman PCB needs a refresher course in decision making and management techniques. Majority of problem faced by Pakistan Cricket Team originates from nonprofessional attitude of Board, be it selection of players or managing issues like spot fixing they are always found to be lacking or dragging their feet on something like series with India. Pakistan Cricket team can never perform to its potential unless cricket management changes its mediocre attitude.

I just like to ignore all criticism against the inclusion of Mohammad Amir in the Pakistan team including of Rameez Raja. Amir must be dying to get a chance to prove that he is now a better man and learnt a great deal of his mistake (blunder) for which he has already served his punishment. Thousands of politicians in Pakistan have been downgrading the reputation of the country again and again and many of them are still on top slots in Pakistan. If Rameez is so sensitive he should first raise his objections to those corrupt politicians and demand their resignations before he object Amir to be included in the team.

It is unfortunate that people refuse to appreciate the fact that Amir, a raw juvenile head and on his foremost exposure to the intricacies, acted as his captain directed. It was beyond his mental facilities at hand to understand what difference it would make if he bowls a No-ball under direction, or otherwise which is very normal part of the game. Now, he has learnt his lesson the hardest way, is no more a juvenile and undergone his punishment coupled with mental reorientation. He is now reformed young man and should not be stopped from his honest contribution to make his country proud with his good deeds and performance.

It is so disheartening to see my country of birth keeps making lower lows in backwards thinking, radical religious beliefs, intolerance, narrow thinking, inability to accept responsibility... I could go on. Don't think this is just criticism for criticisms sake. It is introspection, for unless we recognize the issues that are damaging the country, how can we start to fix them? The military can only do so much. There needs to be a long term plan towards enlightened education of the masses to rid ourselves of all the junk ideology and thinking that has infiltrated into the society, especially during and after the Zia era. That all said, have a heart, show kindness, forgiveness and hope. Look at the better side of humans and give them a chance to remake their lives. Amir was just a baby when he made the mistake. He owned up to it, accepted responsibility, paid the price and heis ready for a fresh start. God is merciful and forgiving. Who are we to be otherwise?

All concerned needs to be positive particularly the cricket commentators in their during and post-match commentaries whenever Amir finally enters the cricket fields. Amir too should be ready to exhibit exemplary patience, as anti-Pakistan media won't stop making negative comments. His best answer to his critics would be by his performance 0nly for which he is immensely talented by the grace of Almighty. Now, if he deserves he should play. Full Stop. I give you an example, if a student is caught due to cheating. Pak needs Amir and Asif, the most lethal fast bowling duo in the world, in order to be on top of the world again. The trio has learned their lesson as the punishment was very severe (losing prime 5 years of their life). I don't think they will ever dare think of doing any wrong doing again. In fact they will deter many from going down the same fate. For people who have problem with their inclusion, I have a simple message "watch another sport".

Now, the star (that's what he is and will eventually prove to be) has to be handled 'with care' so that no discord exists within the Pakistani camp. Pakistani cricket authorities must be desperate for talented players if they are considering to bring back a tainted cricketer into the team. He was one of my favourite bowlers and he had the potential to become the best in the world till he was found and proven to be a crook. Perhaps Pakistanis find it easier to excuse corruption considering the rampant nature of this menace in the society. But even at Pakistan's relatively relaxed standards when it comes to corruption, high profile sports stars must be clean with uncopromised integrity.

I think discussion of Amir should be included or not in Pak team should be closed now.Majority of fans and PCB too want to give him another chance. World cricket governing body ICC has also gave him permission to play again.And most importantly after serving his ban he is performing like a champion. At present PCB has no fast bowler better than Amir. So from every angle he should be included for WC T20 squad, I can bet, all of a sudden he will become the most attractive fast bowler of the world.

People bashing Hafeez for speaking his heart out and talking about country's pride is exactly what's wrong with our society. If some one shows his concern over a tainted player, he should be bashed and kicked out of the team???? So apparently corrupt has a place in the team but not ones who don't wanna play along side them. I have nothing against Amir and as he has served his punishment and is doing well in domestic circuit, he does deserve his chance of making a comeback. But what about other individuals who have been doing well domestically during Amir's absence and why have they not been a priority? What has Sadaf Hussain done to deserve such a cold shoulder from the selectors. For anyone who haven't heard about him, please see his stats. This guy has deserved a chance for past 3 to 4 years now but still he is no where to be heard off. Infact, he is not even in the PSL List of players. So 1 player is selected for domestic performances but another is not even in the frame....Nice !!
