GUJRAT: Police registered a case on Tuesday against 24 officials, including the Gujrat assistant commissioner (AC), on the court orders for torturing a union council No 11 chairman candidate and his supporters at a Fawara Chowk polling station.

The district and sessions judge had ordered the case on Nov 7 on a petition by lawyer Fawaz against returning officer Mian Iqbal Mazhar (Gujrat AC), presiding officer Naeem, then A Division police station house officer (SHO) Sheeraz Cheema and other police and government officials.

The petitioner stated that on Oct 31, police and administration officials had tortured his brother, Faraz Ahmed, a UC chairman candidate, and supporters besides spoiling the rigging proofs, hurling life threats and kidnapping them from the polling station.

A-Division police registered a case.

Earlier, District Police Officer Rai Zameerul Haq had suspended the SHO from service on the demand of the Gujrat bar.

Rival groups had clashed at the polling station on the city campus of the University of Gujrat, while the supporters of Faraz and police officials manhandled each other after the reported recovery of fake votes.

Police had arrested the candidate and his supporters after the visit of the AC.

STAMP PAPERS: Stamp papers for Rs20 and Rs50 have been not available in the local market for the last few weeks whereas stamp papers for Rs100 are also being sold at Rs200.

Litigants have urged the authorities to take notice of the shortage of papers.
