General Raheel Sharif decorated with Brazil's 'Order of Merit'

BRASILIA: The Chief of Army Staff General Raheel Sharif on Wednesday was awarded Brazil's coveted 'Order of Merit' award in a ceremony held in the South American country.

General Raheel Sharif is also the first Asian to have received the award.

The chief of army staff was given the award in recognition of his leadership in the fight against terrorism and other threats.

General Raheel Sharif also met the Brazilian minister of defence and offered security assistance from Pakistan for the upcoming 2016 Olympics games due to be held in the South American country.

Also discussed on the occasion were matters related to the anti-narcotics effort in both countries.

Earlier in the week, General Raheel Sharif on Monday met the Chief of the Joint Staff of the Armed Forces of Brazil Gen José Carlos de Nardi, who hailed the Pakistan Army's professionalism and operational achievements especially in ongoing counter-terrorism operations.

Army Chief Gen Raheel Sharif arrived in Brazil after a five-day visit to Washington during which he met US Vice President Joe Biden, Secretary of State John Kerry, Secretary of Defence Ashton Carter and other senior officials.

From Brazil, he will go to Ivory Coast to spend a day with Pakistani troops who were serving there as part of the UN peace keeping force.

His meetings in the US focused on Pak-US relations, military to military ties, regional security and on the situation in Afghanistan, Lt Gen Bajwa said earlier.

I simply don't get it. Why should a foreign country confer awards to a military General for the services he or she has rendered to his own country? There are several countries where war is going on - Somalia, Ethiopia, Nigeria, Iraq, Syria, etc Will President of Pakistan give out awards to Ethiopian General for his war on terror in his country?

@Akbar What the Pakistani military is doing benefits not just Pakistan but the whole world. Remember there are fighters from around the world holed up in N Waziristan and the hate ideology doesn't respect borders. Also, it's a fight other bigger powers have fought and lost despite massive resources and technology at their disposal. Kudos to Pakistani forces. An award well-deserved the the General.

The award is in recognition of all the armed forces. Pakistan armed forces are held in high esteem world wide. UN considers them number 1 choice for UN duties. Ban Ki moon held a special thank you exhibition for the Pakistan UN troops. The General COAS heads one of the most professional armies of the world, that no one dare take on, for fear of the retaliatory consequences.

Congratulations! but frankly we haven't heard of this award. Probably Brazil, a struggling economy, inspired & influenced by China, is trying to seek business opportunities with cash-trapped Pakistan and they know who is the most influenced person in Pakistan to ensure safe and better deals. your Chief is also smart enough to encash for deals & pay outs to your army with no records in home land!

Countries of the third world usually grant highest orders and awards to visiting dignitaries. In Pakistan, we give a medal or highest order to every visiting foreign dignitary. It is so customary in third world. It never happens in advanced world.
