RAWALPINDI: Five rockets were fired from the Afghan side of the Pak-Afghan border towards the gate at Angoor Adda, South Wazirastan, on Sunday, said a statement issued by the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR).

The rockets landed inside Pakistani territory near the border gate, to which Pakistani troops responded with retaliatory fire in the direction from where the rockets were fired.

No loss of life or property was reported in the incident.

It was not clear whether the rocket attack had been carried out by militants or the Afghan security forces.

This is not the first time Pakistan has faced cross-border attacks from Afghanistan.

In October, seven Pakistani paramilitary troops were killed in a cross-border attack on a border post near Angoor Adda.

Pakistani security personnel at the post were also attacked from the Afghan side in July, when an RPG-7 rocket and a few rounds of small arms were fired on the border gate due to which two guards were injured.

The Angoor Adda border post has remained a flashpoint between the two countries.

Pakistan's seven tribal districts near the Afghan border are rife with homegrown insurgents and are strongholds of Taliban and Al-Qaeda operatives.

Local militants have fled ongoing military offensives since 2008, taking refuge across the border and attacking Pakistani military checkpoints and civilians from there.

Iran Border Guards fire three mortar shells into Pakistan

Iranian Border Guards on Sunday fired three mortar shells into Pakistani territory near the Pak-Iran border, according to levies sources.

The mortar shells landed in the Kachao area of Balochistan's Chaghi district.

A levies official who declined to be named told Dawn.com that the attack had caused panic among people living close to the Pak-Iran border.

Levies and Frontier Corps (FC) personnel arrived at the spot as investigation into the incident went underway.

Security at the border was tightened as a result of the attack.

Iranian Border Guards have repeatedly violated Pakistani territory in the past.

Earlier in September, Iranian forces fired mortar shells at Pakistan's bordering town of Mashkail, spreading fear and panic in the area.

In a separate incident, armed militants on Sunday night fired two rockets, leaving six people injured in the Mand area of Balochistan's Kech district.

Levies sources said one rocket hit a house, wounding six people, while the second one landed close to the customs house in Mand.
