KARACHI: One policeman was killed while another was seriously injured on Saturday as unidentified assailants opened fire on a police check-post in the Super Highway area of Karachi.

According to police officials, at least four armed riders opened fire upon two on-duty police personnel while they were manning a police check post on Super Highway.

"One police official was killed while another was seriously injured," said a police official.

Police officials added that the attackers fired upon the police personnel with a 9mm pistol and 30-bore rifle before escaping with the official weapons of the police personnel.

Police contingents reached the spot of the incident and started their initial investigation into the incident.

Atleast nine bullet casings were gathered from the spot while rescue teams shifted the injured police official to a hospital.

The banned Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) has claimed responsibility of attack. TTP spokesman Muhammad Khorasani said in an email that TTP commandos attacked the policemen on Super Highway.

"While the policemen suffered, TTP commandos are safe," read the email.

According to a report issued by law enforcement agencies on the completion of two years of Karachi operation, 232 police personnel including officers embraced martyrdom during the Karachi operation while 23 Rangers personnel laid down their lives fighting terrorists and criminal elements in the city.

The ‘operation’ against criminal elements in Pakistan’s commercial hub was initiated back in September 2013 after the federal cabinet empowered Rangers to lead a targeted advance with the support of police against criminals already identified by federal military and civilian agencies for their alleged involvement in targeted killings, kidnappings for ransom, extortion and terrorism in Karachi.
