BERLIN: Robert Lewandowski scored twice as Bayern Munich routed previously unbeaten Borussia Dortmund 5-1 Sunday to open up a seven-point lead after eight Bundesliga matches.

Thomas Mueller also scored twice after Dortmund had started brightly. Bayern’s attacking midfielder opened the scoring in the 26th minute and claimed his second from the penalty spot in the 35th.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang pulled one back a minute later but Lewandowski scored seconds after the break to kill any hopes his former side had of a comeback.

Mario Goetze, another former Dortmund player, set up Lewandowski’s second in the 58th and then completed the scoring in the 66th.

It was Bayern’s eighth consecutive win to start the season, equalling the club’s own record of 24 points with a plus 24 goal difference from the 2012-13 season.

Bayer Leverkusen drew 1-1 with visiting Augsburg, who took the lead in the 12th when goalkeeper Bernd Leno misjudged a simple back pass, kicked air and let the ball roll into the net.

Karim Bellarabi equalised on a rebound in the 39th after Javier Hernandez’ initial effort hit the post.

Earlier, Schalke 04 missed the chance to move into second place following a 3-0 defeat by visitors Cologne and remain a point behind Dortmund with 16.

Frenchman Anthony Modeste latched on to a fine Leonardo Bittencourt cross and drilled in on the stroke of halftime before Cologne struck again in the 79th minute with Yannick Gerhardt shrugging off two markers to fire a low shot past keeper Ralf Faehrmann.

Simon Zoller made sure of the three points and Schalke’s first home defeat of the season, five minutes later, lifting Cologne to fifth place on 14 points.

Hertha Belin are fourth, ahead of Cologne on goal difference, after Vedad Ibisevic scored twice in two minutes for a 3-0 victory over Hamburg SV on Saturday.

Promoted Ingolstadt continued their fine start with a 2-0 win over Eintracht Frankfurt for their first home victory in the Bundesliga and joined Hertha on 14 points.

Also on Saturday, Borussia Moenche­ngladbach scored two goals in four minutes late in the second half to stun last season’s runners-up VfL Wolfsburg 2-0 at home and cap a remarkable turnaround after their dismal start to the season.

Raffael crossed for Havard Nordtveit to break the deadlock in the 76th and Lars Stindl produced a defence-splitting pass for Ibrahima Traore, sealing ‘Gladbach’s third successive win after starting with five straight defeats.

Hanover 96 moved off the bottom of the table with their first win of the season, edging past Werder Bremen 1-0 courtesy of Salif Sane’s 55th-minute strike while struggling VfB Stuttgart snatched a 2-2 draw at Hoffenheim after Timo Werner’s 90th-minute equaliser.
