Suspect involved in Wasim Akram shooting submits apology

KARACHI: The prime suspect involved in a road-rage shooting incident with former captain of Pakistan cricket team, Wasim Akram, has submitted a written apology to the cricket legend.

In his letter, Major (retd) Amirul Rehman, has tendered his unconditional apology over what he says was a "sad incident" which arose out of road rage and added that he and his family were a great fan of Wasim Akram.

Major (r) Amir said that he faced opposition from his family members in favour of Akram. He called the former left arm all-rounder – also known as the Sultan of Swing – a national hero and pride of the country and added that the whole incident was a misunderstanding.

The suspect also sought a personal audience with the cricket legend.

On August 6, Wasim Akram's Mercedes was shot at on Karachi's Karsaz Road while the former cricket star was on his way to the National Stadium Karachi to conduct a training session for young bowlers.

The shooting incident took place after Akram got into a minor car accident.

Following the mishap the former cricket captain had asked the driver to pull over. A heated discussion had ensued and the suspect, who was sitting in the back seat, came out of the car and fired a shot which hit Akram's vehicle.

Even if Waseem Akram accepts the apology , law must take its due course. The rtd. major , used a pistol, fired in public place and at Waseem Akram/and or his car. If police or Govt. takes no action against the rtd. major, then where is THE RULE OF LAW, equal for all. Would set a wrong example . MURDER, APOLOGISE, AND GET AWAY WITH IT.

Great to see the apology and its contents, specially retired major calling Waseem as "bhy". This shows the respect which retired major have for Waseem Bhai, and civilised people when make mistake, they simply apologise. I greatly appreciate the retired major for taking this bold step and hope that Waseem Bhai will forgive him.

' Road rage ' is a result of frustration due to a lack of discipline on the roads, due to the lack of policing, due to the lack of governance. The armed forces are isolated from these realities faced and endured by the common person........in this one off incident, when exposed, the army man reacted violently and yet the common man is expected to accept this state of affairs ..........is that fair ?

law should take its course even if Wasim Akram accepts his apologies. This is a criminal offense and should be viewed as such irrespective of who commits it. This is the problem with our justice system that people commit crimes and then they are let off because the victim has accepted apology. This crime is against people and a law has been broken so punishment is a must. This is what happens in all the civilized countries. This man has also brought Pak Army to disrepute and should not be forgiven.

in Pakistan every individual with some kind of authority is totally out of control. I am not surprised that the guy who shot at Wasim Akram car was infact a Retired major of army. his letter clearly shows that he is apologizing after his family forced him to do so & that too after exhausting all other options, otherwise it shouldn't have taken him that long to apologize. the law must take its course irrespective of whether Wasim accept his apology or not.

What is this? Apology is the separate issue, and the law shall take its due course. Moreover, the time is ripe now to make one law for everyone for a crime. We cannot have multiple laws for the same crime depending on whether he is powerful or nor. The power could come by money, political, armed forces etc. Since Major was involved, the first news stated that they have located the car but cannot name the person. I at that time thought he would belong to a political party, and now it came out that he's a retired major. In this country, the laws are only for powerless people!

Shooting at someone is not a 'mistake'. Mistake is when you misspell something on a letter or leave the milk out of the fridge all night & it becomes sour or park a car in a 'no parking zone' because the sign wasnt well lit. Using a firearm in public to intimidate people just because you can is NOT a mistake. Its a pre-meditated action that could have resulted in loss of life. How about some jail time for this guy even if Waseem bhai withdraws his FIR, the state should ensure that justice is served and this culture of 'might is right' is discouraged.

Apology must not be accepted. For simple car accident how can someone just come out fire a shot. He must be punished, even the letter of apology is a acceptance of realisation that he shot at the car of a cricket hero so he is apologising, as oppose to a normal public! Our police used huge resources to catch him and now a simple apology which is also centred around a Hero should never be accepted.

Are we setting an example here that Pakistan is jageer of these majors, and they are allowed to wonder on our roads with guns? Why is he allowed to have a weapon to harnesses civilians? On top of that a letter will be enough to shoot and then walk away? What an example we are setting here? Waseem has no choice but to accept considering his position but law must be respected. Otherwise we all should be allowed to shot at Imran's car as well.

Why has he not been arrested by Rangers in Karachi ? and 90 days remand obtained so far, which is the case for thousands of ordinary Karachites who are mercilessly and thrown into jails even on doubt of terrorism and most are released after no evidence is obtained...............Aaah....I am asking too much from Rangers......after all Amir is one of them....He cannot be arrested like the civilians...This is gross injustice.

If it would have been a common man, he would have faced dire consequences. @Sky Major intended to harm whoever was in the vehicle. As soon as people rushed and identified Wasim Akram, Major sahab ran away. Next, he had his driver arrested for a crime he committed. Then got a pre arrest bail. Now offers and apology and calls it a day. Two questions: 1. What would this major do had this not been Wasim Akram? In fact his apology relies on the fact that it was Wasim Akram. 2. Can I get away with shooting someone (attempted murder) by a simple apology?

This criminal should be prosecuted even if he Waseem Akram forgives him. He should be jailed and heavily fined. Would this criminal still have apologized, had his victim been a common man ? Also the Army should take notice of its ex-officer behaving in such manner and court martial him ! Army should set an example for all other serving and retired personnel.

Almost all commentators are assuming WA as innocent. I hope he was. Almost all commentators are blaming the Major - probably because they get a chance to bash the uniformed ones - and he is forced to apologies if he made the mistake.

I am upset that of all the people - it was a retired military personnel. Our officers are some of the finest in the world, this is the most unbecoming conduct of a soldier. Anyways, he should still be tried in court. What he did was a malicious act - those bullets could have killed or caused serious injury.

This is not a personal matter - the shooter's apology should not have any bearing on the criminal case. The proper way for the authorities to proceed would be for them to complete their investigation, file charges and have a court try him. The shooter can show contrition in front of the judge to seek a reduction in penalty. The court of law will be the proper venue for issuing an apology.

It doesn't matter if it was Wasim Akram. It doesn't matter if it was a national hero. Your reckless stupidity and trigger-happy road rage nearly killed someone. You should be in JAIL. The next person you fire a gun towards may not be as powerful at Akram, but you being let loose near them puts them at great risk for their life. You have not taken the potential costs of your actions into consideration and dismissed this as minor road rage. You have effectively set a precedent that it is 'okay' to fire a gun at someone when you're mad so long as you apologise. This is a test of law enforcement - Wasim should press charges because this isn't actually about him. This is about the next person this Major gets 'a road rage' towards.

Wow what an example , just the other day I was advising my wife that I want my son to be a Major and here a retired major has just shown to be the worst example. Its difficult to digest after all that discipline he learned in his years of training and on site, that he decided to be fast and furious. We don't know who is to be blamed, Wasim or the retired Major, but at no cost should he be allowed to hurl a gun at anyone. Someone needs to reprimand him.
