PIA to induct more planes

KARACHI: Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) Chairman Nasser N.S. Jaffer has said that four or five more planes are expected to the inducted into the national flag carrier’s fleet this year.

Addressing a press conference here on Thursday, he said the airline’s service had improved to a large extent with addition of 13 new planes and it was meeting all international standards.

“We have been punctual as far as the flight schedule is concerned for the past several months. We are fast regaining passengers’ confidence and apart from a better service onboard the ground service has also improved, lead to an increase in our customer base.”

He said the PIA was set to launch an e-ticketing system for the passengers.

“We have also adopted a zero tolerance policy against corruption to revive the airline and the services of a number of officials have been terminated after charges were proved against them,” he said.

No mention about the accumulated losses or the quantum of liabilities? Where from will the money come for the new planes? All key issues conveniently set aside.

Four or five plane? In other words, he's not even sure exactly how many, mabe four-and-a-half!? And he's the chairman of PIA!? LOl!!! Just one carrier, Emirates Airlines flies more (newest) planes into Pakistan every day, than all the PIA fleet put together. And Emirates was launched with the help of PIA in the 80s! Look how far we've fallen!! Disgraceful!

@Jamal And some toys can even cost thousands! How will PIA pay for any new plane, when it is is loosing bllions and has huge liabilities on its Balance Sheet (essentially bankrupt) is beyond anyone's comprehension.

Inducting more planes is only throwing good money after bad ( corruption ) .........because unless the PIA's politically inducted personnel strength is not cut by 40% and good management practices injected, PIA will remain a cesspit of corruption and a loss making organization.

We dont need new planes, what we need is a world class service, concentrate on what planes you have, make the service better, open more routes with the current planes (its possible, as we have many of the planes just standing at local pakistani airports). Go for the typical ports where there are a lot of Pakistanis living abroad, why is there no service from Stanstead in Essex (use to be), why no service LA, Houston with huge Pakistani populations.

the only problems i had with this airline was the service offered by the cabin crew was sub standard and below par; the staff seem to have this attitude that they are better than everyone else, the food was bland and not much variety. And then if you go to a PIA agent to book your return date they want 8000 pkr, why do i have to pay this extra charge when i already pay over £500 for my return ticket. that is why my family, friends and me have switched to etihad airlines. Their service is exceptional all round. And every time i have traveled their menu is excellent, 5 course meal and freshly cooked. their staff are friendly and approachable. For PIA to get us back they need to improve quiet a bit. i deal with corporate logistics as a profession and i would be cautious going on PIA.

I see some of the comments having doubts whether PIA can afford the latest generation aircrafts. We are a nation of approximately 200 Million and PIA should be able to acquire 10 times more planes, provided the management takes the right steps. UAE in comparison has no population to support their airline industry and it is the Subcontinent that feeds the passenger supply. It is simply painful to see we bleed all this money to foreign airlines.

Mr. Chairman I am glad to hear about improvement made by PIA. However; your press conference lacks specific. I would urge you announce Key Performance Indicators (KPI) and issue a quaterly report to quantify the progress PIA is making under your leadership. Here are some KPIS A. Financial B. Customer Service C. Safety KPIS should cover the following data Available Seat Mile (ASM): The Basic Measure of Capacity Revenue Passenger Mile (RPM): The Basic Measure of Production Load Factor: Production Compared to Capacity Yield: Revenue per Passenger Mile Revenue per Available Seat Mile (R/ASM): The Best Basic Measure Cost per Available Seat Mile (C/ASM): The Basic Measure I am sure PIA has staff who understand the Airline Industry and knows how establish and measure the performance of the Airline..
