ISLAMABAD: The government sent to the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) on Thursday a draft notification about proposed high-powered committee for redressing MQM’s grievances over Rangers’ operation in Karachi.

The government will wait for the MQM’s response on the formation of the `Grievances Redressal Committee’ (GRC).

Talking to Dawn, MQM leader Dr Farooq Sattar, who is heading the MQM team in talks with PML-N, confirmed that the party had received a document from the government containing all agreed points and the party would respond to it by Friday.

“We are reviewing the draft notification and will discuss it with the government’s team in the next meeting expected to be held in two days,” he said.

Earlier in the day, Federal Information Minister Pervez Rashid told reporters that the prime minister had been briefed on progress in talks with the MQM.

In reply to a question, the minister said the GRC would be formed and the MQM would return to assemblies.

On Tuesday, the two sides agreed to wait for the return of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif from abroad to finalise proposals prepared by them for composition and functions of the GRC.

The MQM team proposed names of retired judges, former army officers, former bureaucrats and members of the civil society for inclusion in the GRC.

But sources in the government and the MQM told Dawn that in the meeting held on Monday, the prime minister stated that its demand for forming a monitoring committee to monitor the Karachi operation could not be met since the operation was being carried out under the supervision of Sindh’s elected government.
