KARACHI: Police on Saturday claimed to have traced and recovered the car that was involved in the alleged accident with Wasim Akram's Mercedes on Wednesday, after which a shot was said to be fired at Akram's vehicle.

“The police have recovered the car, which was involved in the accident with Wasim Akram’s car,” said Karachi-East Zone DIG Munir Ahmed Shaikh. The driver of the car, identified as Abid, had already been arrested.

The main suspect, who allegedly fired the shot that struck Akram's car, has not been detained so far.

The DIG East said police will send the seized car to a forensic laboratory to determine whether it had been in contact with the former cricket star's Mercedes.

The held suspect told investigators that the incident occurred when their car hit Akram's car. The former captain chased them and blocked their way, he said, after which a heated verbal exchange took place and eventually a shot was fired to the ground.

Another police officer, who wished not to be named, told Dawn that Wasim Akram disembarked from his car after the minor accident and used "abusive language" with the other party.

The DIG East said that the main suspect had ‘indirectly’ approached the police to present his version of the incident but the police had conducted a raid to arrest him.

He hinted that the main suspect might get bail before arrest from the court concerned, and therefore, was not surrendering before the police.

The held driver would likely be presented before the court Sunday, and a remand will be sought, said the senior officer.
