GUJRAT: A branch of the Divisional Public School (DPS) will be established in Lalamusa and will start functioning with the beginning of the next academic session in March/April next year. A site for construction of the school building has been finalised.

However, a rented building or that of the Punjab Local Government Academy in Lalamusa could be utilised temporarily until completion of the school’s building on the land selected by the Gujranwala divisional as well as the Gujrat district administration.

An earlier plan of the district administration to set up a branch of Jinnah Public School in Lalamusa city on the consistent demand of ruling lawmakers had now been replaced with that of the DPS.

Official sources told Dawn Gujranwala Commissioner Shumail Ahmed Khawaja along with local PML-N lawmakers and District Coordination Officer Liaquat Ali Chattha had visited the proposed site located adjacent to the Government Elementary College in Lalamusa on July 29. The commissioner also chaired a meeting where the selected piece of land worth Rs250 million was approved besides deciding that initially the school would be launched at a rented place or empty rooms of the local government academy.

According to an estimate, at least Rs200 million were required for construction of the school building. Total cost of the project, including value of the official land, would be around Rs500 million.

Two more branches being built in Wazirabad, Sambrial tehsils

Two more branches of DPS were being established in Wazirabad tehsil of Gujranwala district and Sambrial tehsil of Sialkot district as an initiative of the divisional administration, and sites for both projects had also been selected.

According to Commissioner Khawaja, 70 classrooms would be constructed in the Wazirabad branch that would cost around Rs250 million.

Meanwhile, the divisional administration also planned to launch an ‘Adopt a school’ policy in all six districts of the division. According to the policy, the affable and philanthropists would be requested to adopt a poor public school in their area or any other part of the district and bring it up to modern standards on a no-profit basis.

The commissioner would convene a donors conference in Gujranwala sometime this month to introduce the policy after which such conferences would be convened in other five districts also.

DENGUE: Anti-dengue day was observed at the University of Gujrat (UoG) on Sunday as per the directives of the Government of Punjab.

In this regard, a seminar “Awareness on Dengue Virus Infection” was organized by the administration of Nawaz Sharif Medical College (NSMC) along with an awareness walk with a large number of students and faculty participants.
