KARACHI: The Karachi-South DIG alleged that former MQM lawmaker Nabil Gabol wanted to create law and order situation in Lyari with the help of gangsters.

“Nabil Gabol had asked Ghaffar Zikri, one of the ringleaders of Lyari gang-war, to create disturbances in Lyari and that he (gangster) would be provided arms, ammunition and money for this purpose,” said Dr. Jamil Ahmed said while addressing a press conference at his office on Sunday.

The senior police officer claimed that Gabol also asked Zikri that a person, identified as Rauf Nazim would provide him (Zikri) the required funds to carry out these acts.

This was disclosed by a detained suspect, Amir alias Dhobi, who is one of the commanders of the Ghaffar Zikri gang in Lyari. He was arrested from Lyari’s Kalri area on Saturday night.

During initial probe, the suspect confessed killing Rasheed alias Tension, main commander of Rehman Dakait gang. He also admitted kidnapping a member of Ismaili community from Keamari who was later released after payment of Rs5 million in Zikri Mohalla of Lyari named after Ghaffar Zikri.

The DIG South said that the detained suspect would be probed further and if any ‘tangible evidence’ emerged, legal action would be taken against Nabil Gabol.

“It would also be explored as to why Gabol wanted to create law and order situation in Lyari,” said the police officer.

To a question, City SSP Fida Hussain said that Nabil Gabol contacted Ghaffar Zikri around three-four months ago. This contact was made through ‘internet mobile’ (Whatsapp).

The DIG South recalled that Lyari was ‘epicentre’ of crimes specially in South Zone but after active police action, the situation has improved there to the extent that extortion and killings have ended there. It was because of this better law and order situation that shopping worth Rs70 billion occurred during Eid in the city.

“If Nabil Gabol wanted to revive the old bad situation in Lyari, it would definitely be a matter of grave concern for us,” said Dr. Jamil.

He refuted the allegation that the city police was being ‘politicised.’ “Police are performing their professional work only” said the officer.

Hate literature

The DIG South claimed that the police were actively pursuing National Action Plan against terrorism and disclosed that a high level meeting was also held on Sunday in which it was decided to take action against hate literature and misuse of loudspeaker by religious and sectarian elements.

“You would see the police action against hate literature in next few days,” vowed the officer.

Murder case against SSP

In a reply to a question about registering of case against SSP Mian Jamshed on charges of killing his wife, in Defence a few days back, the DIG South said that if tangible evidence emerged during probe about involvement of the officer in the murder case, he would be arrested.

He said the victim’s brother was here but he did not give statement to the police. Besides, the family did not get the FIR lodged against the officer and ultimately, the police had to register the murder case against the SSP on behalf of the State.
