Building dams

Published August 1, 2015

PAKISTAN is again facing floods owing to monsoon rains, melting glaciers in northern areas and deliberate release of water by India.

Global weather is experiencing radical changes by man-made carbon emissions in atmosphere. Long durations of heatwaves, untimely rain patterns, tropical storms and draughts are the consequences of global weather disturbances.

Despite one of the lowest greenhouse gas emitting countries (acknowledged by European Union), Pakistan is mostly affected by changing weather patterns. Since the beginning of the century, Pakistan has suffered heavy floods resulting in the mass displacement besides property losses.

One of the solutions to floods is constructing large reservoirs at strategic locations where floodwater could be stored.

For instance, in Chicago a large reservoir has been constructed to catch and store floodwater. The same could be given due consideration in Pakistan.
