KARACHI: Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) President Iftikhar Ahmed Vohra has urged the government to immediately withdraw 100 per cent increase in regulatory duty (RD) on import of sugar.

“The unjust decision of raising RD to 40 per cent from 20pc was taken by the Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) despite the fact that the price of sugar in world market is low while it costs dearly in Pakistan,” Vohra said in a statement.

He said the government had taken this step to appease a handful of influential owners and it seemed that they were even able to manipulate the decisions being taken by the ECC.

He said the government must refrain from taking such steps which create more problems for the general public who are already overburdened owing to rising food prices.
