NAB submits revised list of mega corruption cases before SC

ISLAMABAD: The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) on Monday submitted before the Supreme Court of Pakistan (SC) a modified report on 150 mega corruption cases, DawnNews reported.

Earlier on July 7, NAB officials had submitted a list before the SC as per the court’s directives. The list includes cases against high profile figures, including incumbent Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, Chief Minister Punjab Shahbaz Sharif, former president, ex-premiers, ministers and top bureaucrats.

However, the court had expressed dissatisfaction over the report and had asked NAB to include two additional columns in the report for further details.

The revised list includes two more columns showing details of the dates of when the application against an individual was filed and when it was verified by the concerned officials.

Interestingly, the NAB record lacks the details of cases against some top figures, including Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, Shahbaz Sharif, former president Asif Ali Zardari and former Pakistani envoy to the US Hussain Haqqani.

According to the NAB officials, dates for filing and its verification of complain against Sharif bothers are not available. The report said that direct investigation was initiated against the two brothers, after a source passed some information in this regard.

In the case against Nawaz Sharif pertaining to illegal recruitment in the Federal Investigation Authority (FIA), Maj Gen M.H. Ansari is the complainant. The complaint was filed on March 22, 1999 and direct investigation was started in the case without an enquiry.

Similarly, a case was filed against former president Asif Ali Zardari against the report of a source but NAB has no details regarding to the dates of filing complaint, enquiry and investigation in the case.

In the same manner, investigation was launched against Hussain Haqqani and Ishaq Dar on the report of a source.

A three-member bench, headed by Justice Jawwad S. Khawaja, was hearing a case filed by Manzoor Ahmed Ghauri against chairman NAB and other officials. The case, initiated earlier this year, pertains to scrutiny of the anti-corruption body.

The 45 pages report lists 50 cases each of monitory irregularities, misuse of powers and land scams. This development had also drawn criticism from several political segments which raised questions on the credibility of the entity.

Supreme Court must also took notice of indefinite load shedding scandal in which K-Electric is the main culprit .Not invested in infrastructure but rather its performance kept on deteriorating every day has passed & is solely responsible for the death of innocent people. Please take suo moto action and investigate this blood shed .

Whose responsibility is it to ensure that NAB, or any other national institution, is credible and is irreproachable? It is the responsibility of the government and the parliament. Paradoxically, honest and efficient institutions can be deadly for the rulers; so how can they ensure their credibility ?

I weep for the liberty of my country when I see at this delayed days of its futile experiment that corruption has been imputed to many members senates and assemblies, and the rights of the people have been bartered for promises of office. unfortunately our country is now taking so steady a course as to show by what road it will pass to destruction, to wit: by consolidation of power first, and then corruption, its necessary consequence.

White collar crime is always hard to prove........and the court will demand proof and there will be little proof.....so this looks another staged NRO to let the corrupt off. The sad part is that NAB lacks credibility...and the SC's record is, to be polite, not inspiring.

All the institutions in Pakistan renounce their credibility and responsibility when it comes to high-profile figures involving in mega scandals. Unfortunately, even the low-profile cases cannot be solved due to lack of evidence or deliberate collusion. The public must benefit from social networking and media through their parties by putting pressure on them to introduce as a first step de-politicization of institutions like LEAs and accountability bodies like NAB, PAC, DAC, AGP etc coupled with a credible system that does not allow such bodies to indulge in misuse and abuse of powers. In the latest survey in China regarding corruption, more than 70% Chinese voted death penalty for corrupt elements.

Immediately after assuming office of the Interior Minister, Mr. A.Rehman Malik in the company of Mr. H.Haqqani had visited FIA office Islamabad and personally removed all incriminating record pertaining to himself and his masters and ensured their permanent disappearance. The news was well reported in the media dated 12th May, 2010 but, nobody remembers now.

WOW....Just within a week the NAB took a U turn against the most corrupt of all.....I again Reiterate ; what Imran Khan said , That even the NAB is full of corruption, Thinking about it : when a customs officer can be murdered in his house over half a million dollar that would expose the culprit in that country .How can we expect NAB to take action against these kinds of criminals.However the judges can't see that these politicians names are missing in the second report...come on wake up Pakistan, now or never...Demand military courts, we can't tryst NAB or our Judicial system to end all this only and only our army can.

Not guilty until proven. Why NAB has been dragging its feet for last 15 years. It should complete its investigations and punish the culprits instead of using these cases for arm twisting of the politicians. And where are the cases of the Ministers in Musharraf Cabinet?. SC court should ask the NAB to submit the report on plea bargain deals and in the process how many billions were lost. NAB should develop some credibility and transparency for it before even thinking of trying some big names.

There are many question marks on the performance and partiality of NAB itself as those who are sitting in this institute have had political relation. Unfortunately the system of accountability in our society is very weak and it works only against small fish because the big culprits take advantage of their power and money. Even whenever Army has come in power it gave the advantages to it's allies corrupt-politicians and favorite-bearucrates

This is again an opportunity for the Supreme Court to establish its sole role as a source of accountability of the excesses by the Executive branch of the Government. Judicial review and a legal redress for the masses is a separate issue. This three member bench headed by Justice Jawwad S. Khawaja, has the authority to get the NAB to do its job in prosecuting these big names, but if as always it lacks the soul and the blind eyes of Justice these guys will getaway with it. For once please do the right thing and go down in posterity as the Judges who did the right thing and put the country back on an even keel. If you don't the God have mercy on your Souls because rest assured there is an accountability Bureau there.

@Shan; I have been harping on this for quite sometime; if there are corrupt institutions then fix them or ban them because they are not performing their duties. Case in point arrest of over one hundred constables for extortion for various crimes, but not a single high ranking person of Karachi police was charged tells that ruling class has setup their cauldron.

Complete the investigation, arrest them, then get them into plea bargaining; immunity in place for them leaving the country and never participating in politics ever again. Make the agreement public. For those who do not take the offer, convict and sentence them accordingly. Transparency will guarantee deterrence for flip-flop ambiguities; eliminate he said she said and not as per constitution returns of the corrupt - leaving no room for future NROs.

How convenient, it says 'dates for filing and its verification of complain against Sharif bothers are not available'. Similarly, more details for case against Asif Zardari was not available. Great job NAB. For little guys all details become available & his property is confiscated, fined or thown in the jail. However for big guys, just use your 'imagination'. That is true 'monarchy', oops, I mean to say true 'democracy'. Wonder what department I am talking about? Its not No-Action-Board (NBA).

We are not surprised at all with the previous as well as new developnents pertaining to mega corruption cases sumbitted with apex court. History replete with such episodes surfaced and then disappeared. Anyway a little hope can be associated with existing leadership of army and some welwishers, that may mount pressure to courts, and other relevent institutes including media in order to reach its logical conclusion. Let's see.. what next to this development..

Well we can complain all day about having currupt leaders but i guess we need to look inwards as well as we as a nation are currupt from top to bottom. Peons, clerks,teachers (nurturing their own tution centres), doctors (come to my clinic in evening), lawyers(misleading own clients for extending cases), even ordinary citizens offering immediate bribe to traffic constables instead of facing a challan. We are a nation of hoarders, profiteers , looters, religious exploiters and what not...so the BEST among the crowd become our leaders.

How can you expect to work against curruption by bringing in all currupt turncoats under your folds...PTI wants the power at all costs , seems like they have learnt the electoral politics as moral grounds can make you a leader but not a prime minister....otherwise Asghar khan would have been a premier long time back.
