Rain-induced flash floods kill at least 8 in Rawalpindi

ISLAMABAD: Flash floods caused by heavy monsoon rains killed at least 8 people in different areas of Rawalpindi Tuesday.
The flash flood swept away five people, of whom four drowned. There were reports of other deaths due to structural collapse and electrocution.
"Four people drowned when raging water from an overflowing drain entered residential areas in the garrison city of Rawalpindi. Another person died when the wall of a home collapsed," said Waqas Rehman, a spokesperson for the government run emergency service.
Rehman added that rescuers have managed to save 16 people after floodwaters swept them away, and at least one person was still missing.
Terrified residents were seen sitting on roofs as floodwaters surged through the streets in localities of Rawalpindi.
Further spells of monsoon rains are predicted for the effected region. Monsoon rains cause widespread casualties and damage to property every year in Pakistan.

No worries!Thanks to our PM vision we have elevated metro tracks.We can easily accommodate flood victims on those tracks.Moreover Hanif Abbasi Helicopter service will airdrop food and supplies.We are blessed to have a true leader PM Nawaz Sharif(vacationing in Norway with 40 member staff) along the great leaders of Nigeria and Rwanda.

Pakistan, lately has been facing extreme weather conditions. This is happening due to indiscriminate cutting of trees for commercial purposes and not planting them elsewhere. Planting of trees should be undertaken on priority to avoid further loss of lives as nature will show its fury if we continue to destroy it with impunity.

why do people live in the floodplains? one reason has to be that safer areas have been gobbled up the rich. how can people be made less vulnerable? wish i knew. but for sure the excessive construction of roads and high density in flood escape routes is part of the problem. of course better planning and engineering such as roads used for runoffs could help. heatwave in karachi and floods in pindi -- how long will we be deadly towards nature?

As if people dont die from floods in europe and other countries in developed world..deaths are unfortunate but there is no guarantee that in absence of metro bus , they would have been saved...

@Adi Mr that money should have been spent on flood elevation not bogus bus project. and i bet after 2to 3 years metro track will be no where to be seen. what they did in hurry is gonna cost tax payer 46 billion my dear . sher sab kha gya

@Adi - Money spent on better sewage system which has been neglected for years would have saved lives as roads wouldn't become rivers from just rain water. I am surprised you think money spent on Metros instead of sewage system won't save lives.

It is unfortunate that money is spent on service for the sake of making ADVERTISEMENTS ... but the most important things - the Infrastructure is in shambles - please use the money evenly on everything - that is important (education, health, infrastructure, planning etc)

Immature and absurd comments that floods and deaths are due to metro. That has happened in past and will happen in future due to natural disasters. As a nation we are sliding down in blame games without logic. Very sad.

@Last Word ... This weather is caused by carbon particles in the atmosphere and a huge tear in the ozone layer from aerosols and chemicals entering our atmosphere. The hole in the ozone layer and carbon emissions have melted Arctic and Antarctic ice warming the oceans and sending more water vapor into the air currents causing heat and rain in varied locations.

@A. Ercelan ... People live in flood plains for two reasons. There are too many people on the planet is one. Two, women are reluctant to move from home. They refuse to leave friends and extended family to begin again. They often have too many children to move with them. Large families can't find affordable houses or apartments in the cities. For some, they face food insecurity. Even Palestinian women don't want to leave Palestine when they could have had better lives elsewhere. That's the life.

Islamabad has recieved 156 MM of Rainfall which is heaviest in some time. I bet even it happens in Europe, things would be same or even worst. With kinds of cloud burst, it is bound to get flood at least at the time of Rainfall. In Peshawar last year only 50 MM of rainfall has cause 50 Deaths.

Problem remain within the community. Our drains are not properly maintained we will not bother taking care when disposing off garbage rather throwing on roads. Filling Nalla Lai with household garbage we still blame the Governments. many coming out and blaming Metro have a heart and see what we lack as a community.
