Apropos “Creative Solutions” (July 3). The focus of our policy planners should not only be on universal access to education for our youth, but provision of an education tailored to the administrative, economic, technological and security needs of our country.

A standardisation of the syllabus should ensure proper acculturation to our socio-religious values regardless of the potential alumni of all educational institutions. The ban on ‘quality apartheid’ should be enforced in education through strict policy measures and by reducing the gap between the elite and the impoverished.

Merit alone should be the criterion of advancement to the university-level, channelling low-achieving students towards vocational training fields of practical value. An educational milieu churning out too many supervisors and too little workers needs to be modified to create a balance. It’s time our educational policy planners looked beyond “Bloom’s Taxonomy of Educational Objectives” to evolve an indigenous and homespun taxonomy responsive to our special needs.
