Sectarianism impeding development of province: Dr Malik

GWADAR: Balochistan Chief Minister Dr Abdul Malik Baloch has said that extremism, sectarianism and negative trends are being spread in society to cause chaos and destruction in the province and to impede progress and development in the province.

Talking to different delegations of people, who called on him in Turbat, the chief minister said that people of Balochistan were Muslims from generations but some hidden hands were promoting extremism and sectarianism to divide the people on these lines and cause anarchy and destruction to stop development of the province.

Dr Baloch underlined the need for promoting moderate and progressive thoughts to foil scourge of sectarianism and extremism which were impeding progress and prosperity of people.

He pledged that the government would deal with such elements sternly.

The chief minister said that the government had taken several measures for development of the province to boost its economy so that the people could get jobs and become prosper.

He said that development work on the Turbat Dates Factory project was under way and Turbat would soon be declared industrial zone soon and farmers of dates would be provided packing material free of cost to boost dates’ industry.

He said the government would also ink a new agreement with Iran for supply of electricity to the Mekran division.

"the need for promoting moderate and progressive thoughts to foil scourge of sectarianism and extremism" were lost when Bhutto was forced into conceding to Mullahs demands as early as 1974. Pakistan has never looked back since then. What you sow is what you reap.

Who are the people working to create the sect based rifts? Unless the culprits are identified and up-rooted for good, such crises would continue. And, those cooking their broth in the resulting infernos, need to be tackled even before.

All the stakeholders in Balochistan have to work together to restore peace in the restive province. The government has taken few steps to take Baloch insurgents on board like releasing of Baloch missing persons and offering incentives to those laying down arms. Such efforts should be pursued sincerely and government-to-people contacts should be established off-the-shelf so that their grievances are heard and solutions trotted out. Such actions on part of the government would definitely thwart sectarian and extremist elements from spreading anarchy and chaos in the province.

At least some one from power corridor openly accepted the sectarianism is one of the main causes of chaos in Balochistan instead of blaming other countries only. First put your house in order before blaming others. By the way, why for decades on concrete action was taken against sectarian organizations and they were allowed to establish and destroy the society?? Nip in the bud or be prepared for the damage.

I was born in a Punjabi Speaking family in Quetta. I grew up in Quetta, with my friends who were Baluchi speaking, Pushto speaking friends, Urdu speaking. We were neither Baluch, nor Pashtun, nor Urdu speaking or Punjabi, we were just friends. After graduating we worked in different fields. I joined education department. I had very respectful students from different ethnic background. I worked n different parts of Baluchistan. Gradually the boys were getting educated and getting the training of their mind to think. I was seeing a change. This is horrible that due to unrest in Baluchistan, teachers/Professors from other than Baluch/ Pushtoon ethnic background have left. This has pushed Baluchistan backward by decades. Dear Chief Minister Dr. Malik, please do something that friends from different ethnic backgrounds are friends again. I consider my self a Baluch.
