I remember a poem from childhood - "khoob ladi mardani...vo to Jhasi ki raani thi". She was a Maratha young girl...fighting for a kingdom in North-India. Marathas, have a great history of bravery, patriotism and ware-fare, starting from 16th century. It was the founder of Maratha Empire...Shivaji....who first gave this mantra of "Swa-Rajya" or Self-rule, which M.K Gandhi later picked up. I am a north Indian, but i have no shame in saying that it was the treachery of north-indian kings and clans, due to which Marathas lost 3rd battle of Panipat to Abdali's forces. Only if north-Indian kingdoms had participated in the battle, we would have not only won Panipat, but would have decisively united the entire sub-continent, including Afghanistan. Only if....! So no wonder, that the maratha general Bhau Sadashiv Rao, who lead the armies in Panipat with supreme bravery, was a cousin of Jhasi ki Rani.

I am sure most of the Pakistani dont know about history of Rani jhansi.

There are very few people who talk about the Independence movement from British Rule in Pakistan. I have never seen any TV show , Movies, News about how we fought together for freedom. While in India Independence day is celebrated as end of colonial rule and emotions are against England, but I have noticed that the Pakistan's theme has been not end of colonial rule instead they celebrate "The Partition of India". Over the period of time they have been told that they didn't got Independence from British, instead they got independence from India. I doubt that They know about Mangal Pandey , who fought for Bahdur Shah JAfar, for 1st Independence movement in 1857.

@Ajay vikram Singh Treachery never wins.You forget hear Mahadji Sindhiya,after the Panipat he again brought the Maratha power to northern India.Till his death he was the only person in India whom Britishers used to fear and for them ruling India was a dream and only after his death Britishers started to swallow India swiftly.Only Ranjit Singh was the prominent king after Mahadji's demise.

One thing for sure, compared to Bollywood garbage, Bengalis make better movies in India.

Rani of Jhasi was a hero of the subcontinent- I hope the movie does justice to her. Unlike some of the other rubbish like Asoka that was spewed out a few years ago.

@Raz - Mughal rule in India had ended long back before 1857. Mughal rule was limited to only their palace. In fact, Mughal king was living under the protection of Marathas. Let me quote you from the horse's mouth. "After winning in Panipat, Abdali wrote in his letter to Maratha prime-minister on February 1761: There is no reason to have animosity amongst us. Your son Vishwash Rao and your brother Sadashiv Rao died in battle, was unfortunate. Bhau started the battle, so I had to fight back unwillingly. Yet I feel sorry for his death. Please continue your guardianship of Delhi as before, to that I have no opposition. Only let Punjab until Sindh river remain with us. Reinstate Shah alam on delhi's throne as you did before and let there be peace and friendship between us, this is my ardent desire. Grant me that desire." British Governor-General in 1806: India contains no more than two great powers, British and Mahratta. Every inch that we recede will be occupied by them.

@Ajay vikram Singh I read about her while growing up in Pakistan.

Even the British admit that Rani Laxmi Bai was a worthy opponent when they scoff at the rest. The Rani was an able administrator as well as a very brave fighter. The Mughal king in Delhi at that time was merely a figure head and a British puppet. Even though he refused to join the fight against the British, his sons were blown off with cannon or hanged and he himself is buried in an unmarked grave in Rangoon. One can hardly call him a Mughal king.

How come Pakistani Television and movie makers never made movie on any of heroes the 1857 war of Independence? That was our first war of Independence, second was won by Jinnah without firing a bullet. Rani of Jhansi is a subcontinent role model for women. Her death should be celebrated by both India and Pakistan, at least there is some thing common for both to be proud of.

@AIB You are wrong about that, my clan always mention the name Rani of Jhansi for a brave act by any brave female.

@Ajay vikram Singh. The poem is written by Subhadra Kumari Chauhan. It is a long poem. Its refrain is : Bundele Harbolon ke Mukh Hamne Sunee Kahani thi. Khub Ladi Mardaanee wo to Jhansi waali Raani Thee. The poem is in the school curriculum. Recently the Scindia family managed to have deleted : Angrezon ke Mitra Scindia ne chhodi rajdhani thee. People protested and it was restored. It was Scindia who sided with the British against the Ranee of Jhansi, that led to her killing and premature end to the war by the rebels.

Not only Jhansi Rani was brave but equally beautiful,her beauty reminds be yesteryear Bollywood actress "Madubala".Rani's original photo available on net any body will confused her for Madubala

I wish to share the struggle of another Rani who fought against British forces for the same reasons as Rani of Jhansi fought and much earlier to 1857 struggle. She is Rani Chennamma of Kittur in Karnataka province of South India in the year 1831. She fought against Col Thackery of the British Army and won the war. But, she fell only due to treachery of her own people who were lured by Britishers. India was ruled by Britishers not because of their might but of our own people's let down. Same is the story when Alexander invaded India by defeating King Pururava or Paurus.

@RAZ, well you know when you search for "Indians" on wiki, Akbar is there.Pakistan (alone) cannot claim the Mughal Empire just because the religion is same.

@Raz If u read history carefully, all mutineers declared Bahadur Shah Zafar as their leader. So all Indians (irrespective of class, cast, religion) united behind the last Mughal king.
