KARACHI: The Pakistan Rangers Sindh reportedly detained two central leaders of Sunni Tehreek (ST) late Sunday night, a party spokesperson told Dawn.

ST Spokesperson Faheemuddin Shaikh said their party chief Sarwat Ejaz Qadri and central leader Shahid Ghauri had gone to meet the Rangers’ officials at their office in Mitharam Hostel but they have been ‘detained’ since last seven hours.

He added that the Sunni Tehreek leaders had gone there to take up the issue of Rangers’ raid on their head office despite the fact that they were supporting the Rangers-led operation to bring peace in the metropolis.

He said their party leaders wanted to convey that if Rangers had any credible information about any party’s involvement in illegal activities, they should take action against it.

If ST workers are found guilty, the party is ready and willing to hand over them for inquiry, he added.

The Sunni Tehreek spokesperson said that their party leaders have been taken into custody and their security has also been withdrawn.

Despite repeated attempts, the Rangers’ spokesperson was not available for comment.

However, later the 'detained' ST leaders issued statement that they were not taken custody by Rangers.

Rangers had picked up several activists of the Sunni Tehreek in a raid on its headquarters in the old city area on Wednesday, according to sources and the party leaders.

Though there was no word from Rangers, the spokesman for the ST said more than 15 people had been rounded up.
