ISLAMABAD: The World Food Programme (WFP), which delivers food assistance in emergencies, will start operating its ‘temperature control storage facility’ at Port Qasim on Monday to protect temperature sensitive commodities.

These commodities are to be utilised to treat malnourished children and women through the nutrition and livelihood projects of WFP being implemented in Sindh.

WFP Director of Procurement Division, Corinne Fleisscher, who travelled from the WFP headquarters in Rome, will inaugurate the facility.

The WFP is carrying out projects to improve livelihoods and reduce communities’ susceptibility to disasters in Tharparkar, Sanghar and Mirpurkhas with a grant of $2.78 million from the Australian government.

Around 13,200 families will receive cash payments for participation in disaster risk reduction activities.

The UN agency is focusing on families bearing the brunt of drought in Tharparkar and Sanghar.

Following assessments to identify the communities’ needs, the World Food Programme has identified a series of activities related to water conservation, rainwater harvesting, pond construction in grazing areas, food and fodder storage and repair of culverts and access roads.
