NEW DELHI: Indian police have arrested five men on charges of assaulting and raping two women tourists in India's beach capital of Goa, a local official said late on Wednesday.
The men stopped the women's taxi on Monday evening, posing as anti-narcotics police, Umesh Gaonkar, district superintendent of police for North Goa, said.
The women and the taxi driver were taken to a flat where they were assaulted, Gaonkar told Reuters.
The driver was released the next morning and helped police find the women and the men accused of attacking them.
Millions of Indians took to the streets in 2012 after a medical student was gang-raped and killed in New Delhi, to demand official action to reduce the number of assaults on women.

I am a Goan living and working abroad. Goans are well educated, hardworking people.
Goa have a good reputation among the foreigners as a safe destination.
There is a Influx of Migrants and laborers from other parts of India to Goa. Many criminals also enter Goa. These five men who committed rape is not local Goans.
Goa Police should check all the immigrant who come to Goa if they have any criminal record. We don't want reputation of Goa as a safe destination to be spoiled by these criminal pests.

@Sunetra
World expects cheap labor in huge quantities, outsourcing, IT and helplines. Rapes, world already knows but still some foreigners brave the dangers hoping they will not fall victim.
This is what you are ashamed about but what about 2500 dead to heat and the best your politicians could do is blame Pakistan for intentionally sending those heat waves, how do you feel there?

India needs to launch a huge media campaign to abolish highhanded gender based discrimination against women and should focus on its so called democratic policies in Kashmir.

As an Indian, I have to say, we are heading in the wrong direction- downwards. This current Government is the worst government in the history of our nation.

According to National Crime Records Bureau of India, 24,923 rape cases were reported across India in 2012, while the 5 year average over 2007-2011 was 22,000 rapes a year.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rape_in_India
whereas 60% rape case are unreported. It is really shameful for a country that claims to be the world's largest democracy.

@Asi I don't get it what the connection between democracy and rape. China had over 33K rape cases in 2007 since then reported avg. by Chinese Govt. is around 15K - which Women Rights Group in China contests, they believe the numbers are in 30K - 40K

Goa was a Portuguese State. Soon after independence from British, the Indians occupied Goa without the consent of Portuguese.

First India should start handing out the right placards to the police. We are not going after "cool" ......Rape is wrong it has nothing to do with being cool or uncool. And campaign should be in multiple languages not just english

Definitely there is concerted effort going on to strengthen laws protecting women and children in India. These news articles showing up in the front pages is part of that campaign. Highlight the issue and bringing awareness among victims, police, social welfare teams and society as a whole on how to better deal with this.
Even considering low reporting of sexual violence, India is way better compared to other countries on sexual violence count. Gender equality is different story.
