SIALKOT: The Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) on Wednesday granted 12-day physical remand of Inspector Shahzad Warraich who had shot dead two Daska lawyers this past May 25.

A Joint Investigation Team led by Sialkot DSP (Headquarters) Sheikh Shahid Ikram produced the accused police inspector before the ATC in Gujranwala amid tight security. The JIT sought 15-day physical remand of the accused but the court granted 12-day remand to police.

On May 25, the Daska city police had registered a case (No 550/2015) against its SHO Shahzad Warraich under 7-ATA, 302, 324, 148 and 149 PPC for killing Daska Bar Association President Rana Khalid Abbas and Irfan Chauhan after a minor clash in front of the main gate of the Daska police station.

Police arrested Shahzad Warraich and proceeded against him.

The Daska police have also registered two cases against more than 100 people for torching the offices of DSP and TMA besides the residence of the assistant commissioner during protest against the brutal murder of the lawyers. QUL: Quran Khwani for the slain lawyers was held at their villages Seikhwaan and Chhaanga in Daska tehsil. A large number of people including lawyers from across Punjab participated.

PPP Punjab President Mian Manzoor Ahmed Wattoo and Tanvir Ashraf Kaira went to the houses of the slain lawyers and condoled with their families.

Speaking to lawyers at the Daska Bar Association, Mr Wattoo condemned the murder of lawyers and expressed solidarity with the community. He hit out at the Punjab government for failing to control lawlessness and said had stern legal action been taken against the officials responsible for the Model Town, Lahore tragedy, the Daska incident would not have happened.

GUJRANWALA: Police on Wednesday registered a case against 52 members of the District Bar Association (DBA) for damaging official property during protest against Daska incident.

A number of lawyers including DBA members took out a rally and staged demonstration outside the DCO office. They smashed windowpanes and main gates of the office and chanted slogans against police.

The Civil Lines police registered a case against the lawyers and conducted raids at there residences to arrest them.
