ISLAMABAD: President of the Republic of Maldives Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom — who is scheduled to hold talks with Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and President Mamnoon Hussain — arrived in Islamabad Wednesday on a two-day visit, said a report published on Radio Pakistan.

The Maldivian president received a warm welcome by PM Nawaz and other members of the premier's cabinet, when he arrived at Nur Khan Airbase.

A 21-gun salute was given to the guest as he disembarked from his aircraft and two children presented flower bouquets to him.

Foreign Office spokesperson Tasneem Aslam had earlier said Pakistan and Maldives will review all important aspects of their bilateral relations during the Maldivian president's visit.

"A number of documents on cooperation in sports, health, education and illicit drugs and narcotics trafficking will also be signed", Aslam had said.

She had said Pakistan and Maldives enjoy close and cordial relations, adding that the relationship is based on mutual trust, common faith and understanding.

Pakistan and Maldives have been actively cooperating with each other at a regional level and within multilateral fora.

The Maldivian president was scheduled to visit earlier this year on his first state visit to Pakistan. The trip, however, did not materialise.

Pakistan has enjoyed visits from many foreign dignitaries since the commencement of 2015, including Chinese President Xi Jinping with whom a staggering 51 Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) were signed, and Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena with whom six MoUs were signed.
