BAHAWALPUR: Pakistan’s first-ever solar generation project was formally inaugurated at the Quaid-i-Azam Solar Park (QASP) on Tuesday by Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif along with Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif.
The QASP has been designed to generate a total of 1,000MW of electricity. The QASP’s first unit reportedly went into test run last month and had achieved successful results. The generated electricity was being supplied to the National Grid System.
PM Nawaz was warmly welcomed upon his arrival as dancers presented a beautiful traditional dance of the area while two renowned folk singers of the area also entertained the gathering with their melodious voices.
The premier also inaugurated a commemorative stamp issued by the Pakistan Post.
Pakistan will overcome power shortage by 2017-2018: PM
On the occasion, PM Nawaz said several mega projects in the power sector have been launched which will help overcome the power shortage in Pakistan by 2017-2018, said a report published on Radio Pakistan.
Terming the 46 billion dollars of Chinese investment in Pakistan as unprecedented, PM Nawaz said that all projects with the Chinese cooperation will be completed on time. He said Pakistan and China will establish a special committee in order to ensure these projects are completed on record time.

The premier announced Rs20 million as reward for the workers at Quaid-e-Azam solar park.
He said this the first time in Pakistan that a democratic government is delivering. He added that his government also wants to improve relations with Afghanistan, and eliminate terrorism from the entire region.
PM Nawaz further said that the temporarily displaced persons have started returning to their homes in Waziristan after terrorism was rooted out in that area. He added that this is a great achievement and the country's armed forces deserve appreciation.
Speaking about Karachi, PM Nawaz said that the situation in city has improved and extortion and kidnapping for ransom have been significantly reduced. He added that Karachi will once again be the city of lights.

QASP will be the biggest solar power project in the world: Shahbaz
Speaking at the ceremony, Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif said that once completed, the QASP will be the biggest solar power project in the world.
He also revealed that China provided a Rs2 billion concession on the project. He further added that that the project will begin generating another 350MW of electricity by the end of this year.

Punjab Chief Minister Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif, Acting Governor Rana Muhammad Iqbal Khan, Minister for Water and Power Khawaja Muhammad Asif, Minister for Petroleum Shahid Khaqan Abbasi and Chinese ambassador Sun Weidong were also present on the occasion besides a number of Federal and provincial ministers.

In the first phase, at least 0.5 million solar panels have been installed in three blocks over 500 acres of the solar park land.
Earlier, the infrastructure for the park, including a boundary wall, buildings and roads were constructed while water was taken to the site from a nearby canal. The construction work of the first phase of 100MW had been taken in hand last year.
The second and third units of the solar park comprise 300MW and 600MW, respectively. The work on these two units had been jointly inaugurated last month in Islamabad by the Chinese President Xi Jinping and Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif. The second phase is expected to be completed in the beginning of next year followed by work on the third phase.

Don't mean to be a pessimist but how many projects has Nawaz Sharif or anyone else inaugurated. Dams, Pipelines, Coal Power...the list goes on. When will any of these so called Mega Projects every see maturity and when will we start decreasing load shedding.
It heart-breaking to know our leaders care nothing for the welfare of the people.

Why load-shedding has not gone down? What is the cost of solar power from the solar Park - as per reports in the media, solar energy to be generated has been allowed upfront tariff of Rs. 19 per Unit. At this cost, is solar energy affordable for us? On the other hand Neelam-Jhelum Hydropower Project completion is getting delayed due to non-availability of required funding - but the Govt can spend 50 billion rupees on Pindi metro bus project? Why continue fooling the nation? Why these issues are not debated in our Parliament?

Good job, Thanks PML(N) for working efficiently on generating abandoned electricity. These are the works of doing for the government and if in our country every ruler learns to work diligently and honestly then the days are not far when our country will be a place to live with peace and comfort.
Beside this the PM is requested to urgently focus on making more and more reservoir for water storage across the country in order to avoid danger of serious water scarcity looming over Pakistan.

Good work has to be appreciated, I am not a huge fan of this government, but do give them credit for improving Law and Order, Pakistans Financial image (improving abroad) and other development projects this government has done, a lot more needs to be done. @TRUTH: The solar powered electricity will not require tons of furnace oil import and hence great for the economy. The per unit price will naturally be subsidized. The difference is, the government will not be importing the oil but using solar power given by nature.

The energy incident from the sun is around 1000 W per sq meter.1000 MW means energy being trapped from 2 sq km approx.It is a very good project and will lead to more profusion of solar energy throughout the country.The energy being fed to the grid is good.Now all canals ,lakes ,pedestrian paths...must be covered with solar panels to ensure solar revolution.

It is good start, but when, and where, why theory is doubtful, they gave the target for removing the bottle neck of corruption in supplying the energy within six , then one year, after two years now target is 2017,18,. It looks difficult till other administrative bottle neck not removed, population expulsion, census, and effective management draw backs are there? It is matter of production, it it is distribution and revenue collection from big government's aligned elements, like industrialist, traders and corrupt powerful lobby of PML (N). All are seemed and proved to be dishonest and corrupt.

We in Dubai, gave a tariff to Dubai Gov that is 4 times lower than this project in Pakistan. It means Pakistan is willingly paying 4 times more money than Dubai for buying Solar Energy. So a poor nation pays multiple times more than a rich country. Who is responsible? Dont they know about Dubai solar project? For sure they do....this is corruption and incompetence.

@last comment it is in Cholistan Punjab because it is a govt of Punjab project. Cholistan is a vast desert but very close to Bahawalpur and well connected by road network hence easily approachable. Whereas Thar is for from any large developed city and there is scaracity of water. Gov of Sindh been planning Thar Coal Power Project for that area.

All provinces need to work and improve on safety and security first. Second will be to build roadways, improve mining, and curb ethnic violence in Balochistan. The mindset needs to be changed that all lands located within the boundaries of Pakistan belong to all Pakistanis and their children and grandchildren. Pakistan should remain a modern Islamic Democracy without sacrificing local cultural values. It is high time that Nationalism should be spiked. In the past people were talking about a failed state, the game was played by few out of control military generals and corrupt politicians. Pakistani Nation was held hostage then taliban's turned against us and rest was ugly. Let us learn from our mistakes , let us look to the future and make a new progressive Pakistan.We do not have to sacrifice our moral values and decency, in the name of modernization. LNG Drama.
Efficiency = 55 % ( maximum )
Heat Rate = ( 3413/55 )*100=6206 BTU/KWh.
Cost of 1 million BTU ( 1,000,000 BTU )= 1700 US cent.
Cost of 6206 BTU Energy =10.55 US cent.
Gasification and transportation cost of LNG from Karachi Port to Punjab area= 1.45 cent/KWh.
So Energy Cost component = 10.55 + 1.45 = 12 cent/Kwh.
Now come to the EPC cost =5 cent/Kwh without Kickbacks.
Now come to the O &M cost, Long term service Agreement cost, Financing cost, IDC ( Interest during construction for 36 month minimum + Land cost + Civil construction cost ) =3 cent/Kwh.
Now Total cost of electricity per KWh = 12+5 +3 = 21 cent/Kwh.
Now add Transmission and distribution cost plus theft = 2 cent/Kwh.
Electricity cost at the door of consumer with imported LNG= 23 cent/Kwh.

Use your head. Progress has to begin somewhere. The PPP thought they could do everything at once the Pakistan way - in their dreams. Progress is hands on - not hands up lifted.
We get things done one project at a time (and see it through to completion) or we finish nothing. One cannot give out contracts to for a price all over Pakistan just to give the impression progress is being made.
Nawaz Sharif realized Pakistan does not have the expertise in many areas and China does. He is not selling contracts to family and friends.

Let the masses feel happy for the time being that electricity is being generated.
It is another matter, that a new "Circular Debt" is in the making. The numbers are mind boggling. There is Rs. 10 per unit KWH premium to be paid, for the RS 19 unit rate.. Multiply that with present 100 MW power capacity, or RS 10 X 100,000 KW equals RS 1 million for each hour, multiply that average equivalent 5 hours a day equals Rs. 5 Million a day premium and then multiply by say 330 days, it becomes about RS 1.7 Billions, a year. For 1,000MW, that will be Rs.17 Billions annually, for the next 10 years. Can the GOP afford it? or we shall be debating it, once the time for payment comes.

This is the Punishment to the innocent people of Pakistan. The energy which is available at the rate of Rs 6 /KWh will be supply to the people of Pakistan at the rate of Rs 19/KWh. Peoples are appreciating because of unawareness. Tell me the leading Nation where the solar resource is less than Pakistan Just like Germany, Spain, Morocco are getting energy through the same technology at less than Rs 10/KWh . Across the Sea Dubai ( DEWA ) made an Agreement for the energy from PV solar at the rate less than Rs 6 /KWh. What a joke is going at Pakistan. Who is responsible.

The German energy regulator, Budesnetzagentur (BNetzA), published the result of the first German renewable tender aiming at setting up financial support for 150 MW of ground mounted PV capacity: a total capacity of 157 MW (25 bids) has been awarded at an average rate of €9.17c/kWh. The support average price is almost 20% below the cap allowed for bids (€11.29c/kWh). However, the rate is higher than the current price standard premium tariffs (€9.02c/kWh). In total, BNetzA received 170 bids, of which 37 were rejected. The tender was four times oversubscribed.
BNetzA will launch two additional tenders by the end of 2015 for a total of 350 MW, followed by 400 MW in 2016 and a further 300 MW in 2017.
