ODI rankings: Pakistan's Champions Trophy hopes hang in balance

Pakistan, Bangladesh and West Indies are now locked in a tight struggle for the remaining two slots in the ICC Champions Trophy 2017 whose cut-off date is 30 September 2015.
If Pakistan, who are currently ranked ninth on the ODI table, failed to improve their position then it would face the humiliation of not playing the Champions Trophy for the first time since its inception.
The ICC Champions Trophy 2017 will be played from 1 to 19 June in England and Wales, and the host country (England), plus the next seven highest-ranked ODI sides will participate in the event.
World Cup winner Australia has doubled its lead over second-ranked India on the Reliance ICC ODI Team Rankings from six to 12 points following the annual update.
The updated rankings now see a battle between the West Indies (seventh, 88 points), Bangladesh (eighth, 88 points) and Pakistan (ninth, 87 points).
The three sides are separated by one point and will be vying for the last two places in the ICC Champions Trophy 2017, adding significant interest to their ODIs in the lead up to the cut-off date.
The latest Future Tours Program lists the following ODI series for these teams:
- West Indies (88 points): No ODIs scheduled
- Bangladesh (88 points): Versus India (home, 3 ODIs, June) and versus South Africa (home, 3 ODIs, July)
- Pakistan (87 points): Versus Zimbabwe (home, 3 ODIs, May) and versus Sri Lanka (away, 5 ODIs, July)
The annual ODI update has also seen New Zealand and England head in opposite directions.
ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 runner-up New Zealand has made the biggest move, jumping eight points to be third-ranked ahead of South Africa.
In contrast, England has had the biggest fall as it has surrendered seven points, dropping to sixth-ranked, 12 points behind fifth-ranked Sri Lanka.

I feel a bit embarrassed in even thinking about it but i think Pakistan will make it. We have two tours against Zimbabwe and one against Sri Lanka and we should win least Zimbabwe series while Bangladesh will lose to India and South Africa. Currently Pakistan, West Indies, Bangladesh and England are similar strength teams in ODI format. Pakistan should be way better than current position but least all these bilateral series will hold some significance for all three teams.

Like Hockey Pakistan cricket suffered due to ill planned kick out of senior players. I remember Pakistan hockey dropped after call for fresh blood which never came back after mid 80s.
Same mindset is destroying Pakistani cricket where humiliation of talent and favouritism destroyed the only pride.

There is no need to panic yet, said Mr. Shehryar Khan. Let Pakistan DISQUALIFY from Champions Trophy. then we will "Think of" panicking. Then Let Pak DISQUALIFY from 2019 which will be contested in between top 10 teams. Then will switch on our panic mode. Looks they are working on an agenda given by "someone". I strongly hope that I am wrong. But beware, unlike hocky Future of Cricket cannot be doomed as its in our blood.

If BD(I'm reasonably sure they will) lose to both SA and India let say by a margin of 1-2 and Pak win all against ZM but lose the series(I'm reasonably sure they will) against SL how the points table will look like.

As an Indian fan I am very sad to see this decline in Pak ODI cricket. How can you lose to Bangladesh like that without any fight? Anyway Pak should beat Zimbabwe (without Taylor) easily. But the problem is Bangladesh can cause an upset series victory over South Africa. SA are so dependent on ABD while their pacers will be of little threat to the confident BD batters on these slow low tracks. If the BD batsmen play out the initial overs patiently then SA will be in for a shock because like Pakistan they are not very good in handling pressure. Will be interesting viewing for sure.

The Greens will be greener soon, I am sure! Around 8 ODIs ahead (3 with ZBW and 5 with Sri Lanka), would definitely enable them to bounce back. The new popup BD would most probably move down with 6 ODIs ahead with India and SA.

@Aamir, I fully agree with your observation. Pakistan has always dropped senior players who were performing quite well on the pretext of bringing fresh and young blood. This is completely non sense!! Younger players should earn their place on merit rather than on the basis of being young. All seniors players like younis and misbah have been performing well and they must be kept in the team (all formats) until challenged by some younger players on a serious note. In the past we have seen players like Yousef, Moeen, Aamir Sohail, Saqlain and many others were dropped because board wanted to bring younger players. Unfortunately these younger players have no fitness and physical strength to hit sixes that we all saw in the ODI series against Bangladesh!!

If you watched the world cup and saw Brendan Taylor playing, you will know how lucky it is for Pakistan that he retired right on time. That guy was amazing for Zimbabwe & challenged every team in the world cup.
Here is what i think what might happen.
WEST INDIES - They will make it through as they are not even playing any games. Competition for last spot will be between Bangladesh & Pakistan
BANGLADESH --- Bangladesh gets 2 wins out of 6 games
Bangladesh will win 1 out of 3 games. India will win series
Bangladesh will win 1 out of 3 games. S Africa will win series
PAKISTAN--- Pakistan gets 3 wins out of 8 games
Pakistan win 2 out of 3 games from Zimbabwe and PAK win series
Pakistan lose 3 out of 5 games from Sri Lanka and 1 game is cancelled due to rain and Sri Lanka win series.
Now losing any game from Zimbabwe will hurt Pakistan really badly since Zimbabwe is ranked even lower. The result will be very close between Pak and Ban at the end, anyone can make it..

Ranking 9 for Pak thanks Najam/Sharyar/Haroon/Great Waqar Yunus, when he lost 2011 after that he did not get job and Pak hired again him coach in 2015 than he lost 5 series we are ranking 9. See future what happen if he continue as coach.

Hi guys, Don't be emotional, We have 11 ODI,s Ahead 6 against Zimbabwe 3 at home and 3 in Zimbabwe (As Zimbabwean board confirms that Pak will play series in return of 3 ODI at pakistan), 5 Against SL, out of 11, 4 to 5 win wil make Pakistan upto 7 ahead of WI also, that's for sure...! SA and IND won't let Bangladesh win series..
As i predicted on ICC predictor tool that one loss will make bengalis to move out of top 8 that suits to them better. SO have u ever think that Bengladesh whitewash against Ind or SA?? O common its not a joke, Go green we we with you.

Why do people always see the glass as half full? Pakistan is way ahead of Ireland the next ranked team, even though they have played 33 matches less. And how come our Bengali brothers are ahead of us when we have more than 1000 points over them? Granted they thrashed us in the ODI's, but this team will bounce back (fingers crossed).
