LAHORE: Even-money favourite three-year-old bay colt Lenin stormed home to win the feature event during the 34th Lahore Winter Meeting at the Racecourse here on Sunday.

The Turbat Plate, a class VI division I & II combined handicap race featuring a card of eight races was gone over 1,100 metres and participated by over a dozen horses.

Owned by Bilal Khan, the winner inflicted a six-length defeat on co-favourite bay colt Show Card. Before the race the fans had been expecting a close run between the two colts but it turned out be a facile affair to the great disappointment of connoisseurs of the equine sports.

The winner, steered by jockey Aamir Pervez, clocked a fast timing of one minute 6 1/5 seconds over the race distance — a fraction short of the fastest-ever time of one minute 6 seconds recorded by bay colt Desert Prince on Oct 12, 2008.

However, the racing fans enjoyed some really fine performances on Sunday. Bay mare Aye Shamayan registered her maiden success in the fourth event, chestnut horse Lucky Boy earning his second victory for owner Col (retired) Naeem Sarwar in the fifth event and chestnut filly Lady Extempore recording fourth success for owner Zaheer Aslam and leading trainer Tauqir Ahmad in the space of five weeks.

The mix of divisive cultural politics and growth-oriented economics that feeds Hindu middle-class ambition and provides targeted welfare are key ingredients in the BJP’s political trajectory.
