QUETTA: Police have arrested a suspected militant of a banned group for his involvement in several bomb attacks, including one on a judge of the anti-terrorism court.

Quetta police chief Abdul Razaq Cheema said at a press conference on Friday that Surat Khan Marri had been arrested during a raid on Marri camp, on the outskirts of the city, a few days ago.

During interrogation, he revealed that he was involved in the bomb attack on ATC Judge Nazeer Ahmed Langove in which some policemen and passers-by had been killed and injured, the officer said.

“The accused is an expert of improvised explosive devices (IED) and has confessed that he was involved in more than 10 bomb explosions in Quetta,” Mr Cheema claimed, adding that he was the perpetrator of the subversive acts.

He said the attacks had left several people dead and national installations damaged.

He said the accused had also admitted that he was involved in a bomb blast near a fire brigade office and attacks on police and Frontier Corps vehicles on Mastung Road and in Hazarganji area.

The official said police had seized a large quantity of arms and amm-unition from the man’s home in New Kahan area of Marri camp on the basis of information provided by him.

“The accused informed the investigators about the people who had been providing financial help and giving instructions for subversive activities,” Mr Cheema said, adding that the accused used to receive Rs5,000 for each bomb attack.

He said a case had been registered against the accused under the Explosives Act and Anti-Terrorism Act by Shalkot police and more arrests were expected.
