Brian Lara offers to pay Wahab's fine

NEW DELHI: Talking to NDTV, former West Indies batsman and star cricketer, Brian Lara said it was “ridiculous of the ICC to fine Wahab Riaz” in the aftermath of the Pakistan versus Australia quarter-final during which Riaz bowled an aggressive spell to Shane Watson.
Lara went on to say: “I’ll pay his [Wahab’s] fine.”
Talking about the heated spell from the Pakistani pacer, Brian Lara said, “Watson looked like he was at school. It was amazing cricket.”
Lara said the contest between Watson and Riaz was the highlight of the ongoing cricket world cup. “I can’t wait to meet this guy,” he said referring to Wahab Riaz.
Pakistan vs Australia
During the second quarter-final between Pakistan and Australia, Wahab Riaz took on Australian batsman Shane Watson with a series of fast, short-pitched deliveries. Watson was visibly shaken by the onslaught, as he ducked and moved away from the line of the ball on numerous occasions.
Trying to put the Australian under pressure, Wahab Riaz made several gestures at Watson and even sent a flying kiss his way after unnerving him with some high-quality bowling.

ICC charges Riaz, Watson
Following the exchange between the two players, the International Cricket Council (ICC) charged both Riaz and Watson for code of conduct violations.
Wahab, who finished with figures of 2-54, was fined 50 percent of his match fee for “using language or a gesture that is obscene, offensive or insulting”.
Watson, who was docked 15 percent of his fee, was found guilty of the lesser charge of “conduct contrary to the spirit of the game” for ignoring the umpire’s warning and speaking to Wahab.

I just listened to the NDTV clip using the hyperlink given in the story. It was a very interesting clip, Brian Lara had some very nice things to say about Wahab, the DAWN report says less than a third of what he had to say.

There is no doubt that Watson looked like an inexperienced school-child in the face of Wahab's bowling. Perhaps Wahab will some day emerge as one of the greats of all times.
That said, there were certain gestures by Wahab and a type of body-language that did him no credit. His seniors should counsel him on this. When you are playing before the entire world you should not behave as if you were playing in your street.

Key point is Watson started it when Wahab was batting. So whatever Wahab did was justifying. Otherwise, his actions are not justified. Let's Sangakara was batting and Wahab made those gestures, I don't think anyone will like that. Of course, that spell from Wahab was amazing I have recorded it and watched it 3 times so far.
This is one of those episodes where all cricket loving fans irrespective of their nationality , including Australians appreciate the genious spell. Thank you Wahab.

Well, Somehow i dont feel Wahab has done anything great. The whole media is making a big praise for his fiery spell. Well 9 Overs for 54 runs and 2 wickets with Avg rate of 6.0. Is this what you call it fiery spell?. Common. Let us be practical. Of course there were few good deliveries. That is all. Nothing to be called as a Fiery spell. Above all, Aggression has to be controlled. Hope every one remembers Zaheer khan on 2003 WC final. Some good deliveries, he was on cloud nine. Has he won the match, that is all is important. Look at Rubel Hussain from Bangladesh, he did they same idiotic aggression. What hapenned?. I feel it is good that ICC is placing fine. It is against the spirit of the game to show poor gestures.

I saw his spell and omg what an incredible spell of high quality fast bowling.. I just wonder what would have been the result, if those two dropped catches were taken and Pakistan had another 50 runs of the board.
My player of the tournament is Wahab Riaz and there is no bowler who can match his speed and aggression...

One important suggestion I wish to make:
I feel its high time India and Pakistan do not mix politics and sports and all we Indians would love to see pakistani players in IPL...
I hope this year's IPL has players like Wahab, Irfan, Sarfaraz, Afridi, Fawad and so many other talented pakistani players..

Wahab created millions fans across the cricketing diaspora. It reminded the gone era of some fiery west Indian and Pakistani bowlers. But at the same time being graceful would have been a fine blending of aggression and sportsmanship, a unique west Indian trait which unfortunately not matched by any other cricketing nation. No praise is enough for wahab but at the same time the 'fine' is also correct.

Paradigm shift in game of gentleman. Wahab has set new trend for all formates of cricke. previously it was the batsman who use to entertain, trill and cheer the crowds with lofty boundarie. A bowler would only be applauded if he takes a wicket. Now a bowler will be appreciated and applauded even if not takes wicket provided he unsettl, unnerve and challenge a batsman with his fiery pace and bouncers

When almost all the bowlers are getting thrashed and teams score 300-400 runs, this is what brings the excitement and sets apart teams like Pakistan from the rest of the field. We can even defend 200 on batting pitches and can bring any game to life. What a team! Proud of our team even though we lacked batting resources and the reason for our loss.

It was fiery / heated spell for sure which deserve praise.
But his frequent gestures at the batsman can not be termed as such. He deserved some punishment for this and thus no complaints about the fine. If Wahab is commended for his gestures too then it is apprehended that other bowlers will also start this practice and it will be bad for the game of cricket. Bowl fast as much as one can but no need to involve in gestures.

I guess a spat should not allowed to get totally out of hand, but I agree with Lara, the fine is way to harsh. Cricket is already made into a boring game with bowlers only allowed 1 short ball per over. Now the bowler is not even allowed to get a little under the batsman's skin? No wonder we see so many batting 'records' nowadays. In Lara's days the batsman did not have it as easy as today.

Pakistan Cricket not only needs aggression but also a new mindset/attitude to survive and thrive in new world cricket culture; Wahab Riaz demonstrated this new culture recently. Also - Sarfaraz Ahmed gave a solid display of aggression in some games. Pakistan also needs to eliminate regional politics in their selection process.
The composition of good Cricket is made up of: Aggression 50%, Technique 35 % and planning 15%. Pakistan Cricket needs to adopt new culture ASAP.

why to fine them, as they had shown good sportsmanship after the aggression in the game! they have set an example of how players should be in the field and off the field.

This is a bad play from ICC. The spell from Wahab was out of this world. I have been following up cricket since child hood and dont remember a spell like that..

it should not have happened from either side. what do u get out of it? did pak win? Instead of focusing on fielding and catches paks were indulging in unnecessary acts like this.
and see at the end they were punished.

he was very much capable of making change ... turning things completely for pak.... if aussies had dropped sarfaraj catch or paki would have not dropped the two imp catches... it was a complete different scene. :)

I don't understand the logic, Wahab's spell for about 12 balls was excellent and that too only against one batsman i.e. Watson. But after that there was nothing much to talk about. Pakistan as a nation gets carried away with brief spells of excellence. Playing in cricket matches is about consistent performances and it's never about brief spells of excellence. A similar thing happened with Shahid Afridi, he scored the fastest hundred in his second match and the whole nation went crazy for almost 2 decades only to find him score a hundred once in every 66 matches. Brian Lara's offer to pay his fine is done in very poor taste. Wahab is rich enough to pay his own fine, he does not need Brian's charity. In fact it is the West Indies cricket which needs Brian's help.

I am not accusing one person go and see in the street and city, how we behave? I don't have any concern with other nation in the world. It's a known fact that the Aussies have turned sledging into an art form and it could not have gone unnoticed by the umpires. Very few opposing teams retaliate because they know that the Aussies have the game to back it up so Wahab Riaz taking them on single-handedly deserves praise, not penalties. That bowling spell was the highlight of an otherwise predictably boring world cup so far.

I am an Indian Fan of Wahab and the Pak team esp the pacers for their brilliant show. The way Wahab made the Aussies dance is a message they ought to take seriously.
Why don't we, the people of the subcontinent create a fund to pay the fine? I will delighted to join hands.

@SMJ Very immature stuff - gesture actions - from Wahab. Bowling fast is fine but why involve in acts of gesturing...why ..after all why ? Any one who supports this gesturing act is not doing any good for future of this bowler and for the game of cricket in general.

Lara is a legend and compliments from him say a lot. Money is not the real issue, my concern is that for how long our batting and fielding will keep on humiliating our national sentiments and resolve of patriots like Wahab. For God sake, have some pity on the poor cricket lovers of this country whose haloes are shattered by non sense cricketers of the type of Omer Akmal, Sohaib Maqsood, Ahmed Shehzad and above all Shahis Afridi.
