Race to the quarter-finals: Who will it be from Pool B?

The World Cup quarter-finals are set to begin in a week's time and Pool B seems to have entered an interesting phase to finalise teams for the third and the fourth spots.

With India and South Africa already grabbing the first and second positions, respectively, the competition is now between the West Indies, Pakistan and Ireland to reserve a seat for the next round.

Unlike Pool A, a look at the points table in Pool B illustrates how tricky it is to pinpoint teams for the 3rd and 4th spots.

Here are different scenarios for the three teams vying for a quarter-finals spot:

Scenario 1

In case of rain washing out both Pakistan vs Ireland and West Indies vs United Arab Emirates matches, Pakistan and Ireland would qualify for the QFs with more points.

Scenario 2

In case only one of the matches (Pakistan vs Ireland or West Indies vs UAE) is washed out due to rain, Pakistan and Ireland would still win the race to qualify for the last eight.

Scenario 3

If Pakistan beat Ireland and West Indies clinch victory over UAE, Misbah-ul-Haq's side and the Windies would qualify for the next round on better run rate.

Scenario 4

Net run rate of the teams will be the decisive factor in determining the fourth spot if Ireland beat Pakistan and the West Indies beat UAE. This would mean both Pakistan and West Indies would be on 6 points.

The manner in which Ireland beat Pakistan and the West Indies defeat UAE will be, thus, an important factor in the NRR scenario.

Here is an eye opener statistics friends At present Pakistan has 6 points. West Indies 4 pts. Ireland 6 pts If Pakistan wins ireland match then they enter straight in quarters. But if Pakistan looses to ireland and if west indies wins against Uae then at that stage Pakistan will have 6points West indies also 6 points and Ireland 8 points. That means between west indies and Pakistan net run rate will come into play Now just assume these scenarios If Pakistan bats first against ireland and scores 250 and ireland chases that in 49 overs then Pakistan net run rate will be -0.162 If Pakistan bowls first and ireland scores 200 and Pakistan fails to chase and get all out for example at 190 in 49 overs then NRR will be -0.018 If west indies bat first against Uae and score 300 runs and Uae is all out for 150 then NRR of west indies will be 0.103 If west Indies bowl first and Uae scores 200 and west indies chases in 49 overs then west Indies NRR will be 0.409

Besides balling and bating, I would suggest that our fielding is very very poor. Specially Ahmad Shehzad. Must take care of fielding. Our players do not run after the ball and give way and ask other player to run. This not normal with other European teams although I notice some flow in Indian fielding also in their last match.

Basically, things hinge on Scenario 4. Although, PK and WI would be favorites, its a key match for all 4 teams. Ireland has been playing extremely well and I hate to say this but one cannot forget what what happened in the PK-IR match in March 2007. It was a similar situation and PK had to pack up and coach Bob Woolmer lost his life in Jamaica. UAE may be a junior team but they have surprised everyone. It was a sight to see their players loft sixes to world class bowlers of opposing teams. WI can buckle easily if Gayle gets out early. So both matches have to be watched closely. The heat is on for sure. The only thing which has raised my hope in the entire tournament is how PK beat SA. Otherwise, I would be discussing other worldly things, not cricket. People in Bangladesh are hoping their team to walk away with the Cup. Josh can easily overwhelm the hosh!

There are strong chances for Pakistan and Ireland. Ireland batting is strong ,for that reason they will maintain their net run rate on last match which is with Pakistan. There are very poor chances for west indies to qualify for quarter final.

There is a Scenario 5 which is missed in the article. Pakistan lose to Ireland and West Indies lose to UAE. It's likely because Pakistan will be under pressure and West Indies my try to force run rate and lose quick wickets in the absence of Gayle. In this case also Pakistan go through but in 4th place meeting NZ.

With every possible scenario in focus, let's hope for the best for Pakistan as they have a different composition in WC2015 as compared to WC2007 in the caribbean. So, it's a fresh start for most of the boys. Ireland has nothing to lose from this match while Pakistan's future is hanging by the nail. They have to pull up their socks, like for any other match. RSA is known to choke while chasing, which Pakistan and India both exploited with rain also being a factor for the former. Even the Windies gave India a fright while chasing till Dhoni the finisher calmly showed everyone how its done. It remains to be seen how Pak would fare if Ireland bats first, manages to make some 270 odd (like it did against India) and then pulls out a few key wickets. Misbah is solid, but the likes of Afridi do not inspire any confidence now in a crunch win situation while batting second, does it?

We are unpredictable, that's my only worry. On our day we will beat no.1. But then we were beaten by small teams in the past. Can't relax till the match gets over. We must not take them lightly. They have already defeated West Indies. Till now out strategy has been to bat first. But Ireland is good at chasing. And our batsmen like playing against fast bowling. Irish bowlers will offer hardly any pace. The last thing we want to see is our batsmen playing rash shots. Keeping my fingers crossed.

Pakistan has found the mojo with its win over South Africa and I'm betting that it will beat Ireland easily. My opinion is that, against Australia - particularly in SCG - it must play Yasir Shah. I think it's a shame that Shah has been dropped after just one bad game. (He's also blamed for a missed catch but that was a very tough opportunity, one that he created by moving into position quickly). I personally think Pakistan selection policy is as much to blame as anything else. Sarfraz's exclusion in just one example. Anyway, play the best quicks + Yasir Shah + BooomBoom's leg spin too

The got past SA in an aberration (and I am sure will be thrashed next time they meet Proteas, if at all). This team thins there is a turnaround because on one day Proteas permitted these midgets to get past them. The turnaround that has to happen is for the Pakistani team to buy a ticket back to Lahore/Karachi/Wherever and leave playing cricket to capable teams. @Acp Rathod Yes, it could be very close. Can you explain the current NRR for WI ? I do not see their figures of 1309/248. Why is it only 248 overs ? And comparing WI and Ireland, it is basically impossible for WI to win and Ireland lose and WI not have the better run rate ?

@SAR You have got it wrong. If two teams are even on points, then the team with most wins would qualify. Even in that case also it is equal, then only the Net Run Rate comes to play. Rajasekhar Malabari

Come on Pakistanis don't lose heart, you can easily win against Ireland. In case you lose, please don't break your TV sets as it is just a game in which one side has to lose. However, best of luck.

I also feel Pakistan will beat Ireland In sha Allah and will also beat Australia if they meet in the quarters. It will also be good to see the West Indies beat UAE and move on as they are a entertaining team which will of course give some stiff competition if Chris and Simmons explore Rameez
