Kashmir issue should be resolved under UN resolutions: PM Nawaz

ISLAMABAD: A parliamentary delegation comprising members of the European Union (EU) paid a visit to Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif in Islamabad on Tuesday.
The delegation comprised Ambassador and Head of Delegation of the EU to Pakistan Lars-Gunnar Wigemark, Chief EU Observer Michael Gahler, Sajjad Karim, Richard Howitt and Jean Lambert.
The prime minister emphasised in the meeting that Pakistan lays great importance on its relations with EU countries and that he is in favour of regular consultations between the Pakistani and EU parliaments.
Speaking to the delegation, the prime minister noted with satisfaction that the Generalised System of Preferences (GSP) status granted to Pakistan in 2013 had greatly benefited its economy as its exports to the EU had increased to around US $1 billion.
In response to a question, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif stated that the Kashmir conflict should be resolved in light of UN resolutions.
The divided, mostly Muslim Himalayan region of Kashmir is at the heart of hostility between the neighbours and was the cause of two of their three wars since independence from Britain in 1947.
On Jan 5, 1949, the United Nations Commission for India and Pakistan’s resolution stated that the question of the accession of the State of Jammu and Kashmir to India or Pakistan would be decided through a free and impartial plebiscite. But the Indian government has been opposed to a referendum, excusing itself by saying that the irregularities in Kashmir must be eradicated before carrying out any referendum.
The delegation was assured by the prime minister that his leadership is committed to eradicating the menace of terrorism from the country.
The delegation informed the prime minister that this was their first official visit to Pakistan during the current government’s tenure.
They also expressed their condolences for the victims of the attack on Peshawar’s Army Public School in on Dec 16 last year.

I completely agree. But also , we must give up armed support for the Kashmir struggle. If the Kashmiri people really want to break free from India they will eventually succeed. Our support must be limited to what we actually claim : Moral and diplomatic. No more infiltrators please. We have already paid too heavy a price.

Focus on TTP, attacks on minorities, shortage of fuel, polio and your ailing economy. 60 years of such obsession has brought you nothing but misery while India is shooting rockets towards Mars. UN Convention also requires Pak army to vacate Azad Kashmir AND Gilgit-Baltistan, before a minimal Indian Army can hold a plebiscite.

The problem with long standing issues between nations which appear impossible to resolve is that politicians are completely lacking in vision and ideas. To keep repeating something which has lost all relevance and to which no one, that matters, is paying attention is a case in point. Mr Sharif is just repeating something that Pakistani politicians have been parroting for 65 years and no one pays any attention except the Pakistani public perhaps. But then that, the Pakistani people, is perhaps the only audience Mr Sharif has in mind when he says this since he knows, as those before him that the Indian establishment and the United Nations have long stopped paying attention. I guess he doesn't care as long as he can make his people think he is talking . . .

He is right. India always have habit to ran away from its commitments. Since 1948 the war was stopped because India went to UN and asked them to resolve the issue and there are clear resolutions on Kashmir issue. Why India always withdrawn from these? issue should be resolve according to wishes of kashmiries either they want to live with Pakistan or with India.

Pakistan forgot that India was after Pakistan's life to resolve this issue as per UN Resolution till mid 60s. Pakistan always ducked this conversation ....just because UN resolution says for withdrawal of pakistani army from Kashmir. Mr Nawaz watch out for what you and the rulers of Pakistan have done to your own country with Kashmir centric policy. Right now you are sitting on the dead bodies if at least 150 children .....and still not ashamed.

Also UN have no authority to interfer once this agreement was signed. And both India and Pakisthan know about it .

@wiserneighbour : Do you know about the "Algiers's Accord" signed on 19th January, 1981 between the US and Iran about the US hostage crises and what was its fate even before the ink dried on paper it was signed ? Shimla Agreement had retained some sanctity left in it and it was India that dumped the essence of Agreement, immediately after Indira was assassinated.

This ain't happening! Pakistani politicians can deliver statements like this for home news consumption, but they must learn from 67 years of history and move on. Wasting time and resources while exploiting POK people is not only cruel, but it is immoral! Working with India has more benefits than struggling for Kashmir they couldn't handle, and POK is an undeniable example. Pakistanis may or may not realize it, but both sides of the Kashmiris do!

Mr. Sharif, when Pakistan signed the Simla Agreement, the UN resolution of 1949 became Null & Void. As per the Simla Agreement, Kashmir can only be settled bilaterally between India & Pakistan. So where's the scope of the UN or other countries in this matter?

The 1949 resolution put a number of preconditions that have to be met by both parties. Preconditions include removal of all Pakistani troops, mercenaries and civilians from the disputed areas, which include what are today AJK and GB.The UN resolution is NOT favourable to Pakistan. I wish our leaders and commentators read the resolution before demanding its implementation.

India supported Bangladeshi Refugees who entered India and Liberated with less fight.
And finally sending 90000 Pakistani Troops back in Train and those trains were guarded by Indian Troops to stop the Bangladeshi forces attacking Pakistani returning back home.

Pakistan should not let the Kashmir issue fade away.It is the only binding force for the Pakistanis ,else the country will disintegrate.As far as the Kashmiris are concerned they are no fools to let go a life of freedom and prosperity ,and will continue to play Pakistan card to get more concessions.India is spending a lot over Kashmir and the region is just enjoying the spoils.India has made a lot of investment in Kashmir by resources ,blood ....and will find difficult to withdraw .May be Modi as he grows strong will find it possible to release India out of it ,to avoid further losses.
