ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Post suffered a loss of Rs1.6 billion over the past five years due to corruption by staff of the Postal Department, Deputy Director General of the Ministry of Postal Services told a meeting of the parliamentary committee here on Tuesday.

The National Assembly’s Standing Committee on Communications held at the Parliament House was informed by the deputy director general that 736 cases of fraud and corruption had been registered in departments dealing with utility bills, distribution of Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP) and Savings Accounts which caused Rs1.6 billion loss to the department.

Of the amount, he said, Rs250.37 million had been recovered.

The meeting was convened to discuss fraud/corruption cases in the postal department and to ascertain what action has been taken by the department concerned against officers involved in irregularities.

Members of the committee expressed grave concern over the performance of the department and the fraud/corruption cases and directed officials concerned to provide complete details of employees involved in irregularities and ordered strict action against them.

The members were surprised when told that 70 post offices had been closed in Karachi. They directed officials concerned to provide details in the next meeting of the committee.
