LAKKI MARWAT: The district police have asked the education department to initiate action against the watchmen of government schools remaining absent from duty or showing reluctance to perform night duty.

A police official told this correspondent on Thursday that sub-divisional police officers and station house officers visited several government primary schools during night and found the watchmen absent from duty. He said that the instructions to check presence of watchmen at schools had been issued by district police officer Ismail Kharak.

The official said that soon after the Peshawar school incident the local administration asked the education department to ensure attendance of watchmen at all government schools during night.

The police officials, he said, visited the boy and girl schools in Behramkhel, Tarikhel, Adamzai, Bachkan Ahmadzai, Khankhel Mandozai, Jabukhel, Wanda Jogi and Pezu and found that watchmen at all those schools were absent. He said that this prompted the DPO to approach the local education authorities for action against them. He said that the district education officers (male and female) had been directed to ensure presence of watchmen in the schools, otherwise they (DEOs) would be held responsible for any untoward incident.

KIDNAPPED: A man was kidnapped from Naurang bazaar on Thursday, police said.

One Umar Khan of Nar Hakim Khan told police that his father Gul Subhan had gone to Naurang bazaar to bring construction material for the village mosque. “The relatives got worried when he did not return,” he said, adding that later they learnt that unknown persons had bundled his father into a car and drove him to unknown place.

Police have registered a case against unidentified kidnappers.

AGITATION: The district chapter of All Primary Teachers Association on Thursday threatened to launch an agitation if the government did not accept their demands by Feb 28.

The association’s district president Haji Abdul Rahim chaired its meeting where its leaders said that the government was not paying heed to resolution of problems of primary school teachers. They said that there was no mechanism for promotion of primary school teachers.

Mr Rahim said that their main demands included implementation of time-scale promotion formula and abolition of independent monitoring unit. He said that the government should divert the IMU funds to the education department to ensure effective monitoring of schools.
