PESHAWAR: A terrorist attack at the Pakistan-Afghanistan border in Arandu, Chitral, left five militants and two Afghan security officials dead on Saturday.

Two Pakistani civilians, including a woman were also wounded, whilst two Pakistani security forces personnel were injured.

Official and security sources close to the border say that the militants targeted Afghan security forces on a border post in Arandu. An exchange of fire is still continuing along both sides as light and heavy weapons are used.

The Arandu police station has also been damaged as the clash continues.

Acting District police chief Chitral Muhammad Khalid confirmed that militants attacked the Dibar checkpost on the other side of the border but was unable to confirm the casualties except that bullets also landed in the Pakistani area of Arandu.

He, however, confirmed that two civilians were injured in the firing which hit the Pakistani territory.

The border between Pakistan and Afghanistan passes through remote and mountainous terrain making it difficult to police. The length and porousness of the border allows the Taliban and various militant groups to easily cross the border without detection at various points.

Three suspected militants killed, two injured in Tirah Valley clash

Three suspected militants were killed and two others were injured in fighting in Khyber Agency's Tirah Valley on Saturday.

The militants clashed with peace committee members from Tauheedul Islam at Narai Baba, a remote location in Tirah Valley. Subsequently, three militants were killed and two others were injured. The fighting was said to be ongoing till the filing of this report.

Khyber Agency is one of Pakistan’s seven semi-autonomous tribal regions in the area, where Pakistani Taliban and Al Qaeda-linked militants are said to have carved out strongholds.

Pakistan's military launched the operation ‘Khyber-1’ last month with air strikes against LI hideouts in areas under the Mangal Bagh-led group’s control in Tirah and Bara.

The operation was launched amidst Zarb-i-Azb, a full-fledged military operation being conducted by the army against Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and other militants in the North Waziristan tribal region.

The military operation has reportedly seen a number of militant hideouts attacked and destroyed. It has also left over 245,482 people displaced.
