ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif met with Lieutenant General Rizwan Akhtar, the new Director General of Inter Service Intelligence (ISI), on Saturday morning.
General Akhtar, who took office on November 7, discussed with Nawaz the situation in North Waziristan, and the role ISI can play in putting an end to the Pak-Afghan cross border terrorist infiltration.
This was the first meeting between the prime minister and Lt-Gen Rizwan Akhtar after he took office as director general. They further discussed what role the ISI can play in improving the overall law and order situation in the country.
The premier and spy chief also discussed the possibilities of how to deal with terrorist hide-outs in settled areas of the country other than the Federally Administered Tribal Area (Fata).

Considered a close aide of the Chief of Army Staff, General Rizwan Akhtar is a graduate of the Command and Staff College in Quetta, National Defense University and the Army War College, USA, a military official told Dawn. He is from the Frontier Force Regiment and commanded the infantry brigade and infantry division in Fata. Akhtar is also considered to have extensive experience of counterinsurgency from a previous posting in the border region of South Waziristan.

Normally in democratic countries a military commander, a government servant, meets the head of the head of the government - here it is the PM. But, in Pakistan PM meets the ISI chief is the ridiculous - in terms of democracy and decency.

If Aslam beg was punished for rigging 1996 elections by squandering millions from Mehran bank then no one would have dared to rig last elections. Generals and their corruption is the core problem of Pakistan. Generals kiyanis sole achievement of his tenure was that he saved Aslam beg from going to jail and today Raheel sharif is saving and hiding general kayak is corruption.

@Ali Do you think you can get justice from Courts, the Courts that are controlled by the Govt. And of which the Govt. in power cares less and never accept and comply with the Courts decisions. Our political system is like a class in a school where the monitor controls, the same way our Govt. Is controlled by a monitor called COAS. We always see the PM meeting the monitor to keep his position intact.

@T. M. Reddy You are right, and this is what everyone trying to tell PTI, PAT .. to let this system established. System does not establish in one day, and everything cannot be corrected in one day. Hence let this custom established and we will deal with other ills gradually. Also once after next election PTI / PAT will be in Govt. they will have a better system, a better custom to work with.

ISI is and will always be a very strategic and important arm of Pakistan forces and government. It must be very much in sync with political leadership as long as bother have aligned their goals of making Pakistan a better and safer place. They must confer with each other.

Seriously ? This country is indeed funny. ISI head is supposedly a Govt servant routinely reporting in and meeting the Prime Minister of the country. However the news is as if Nawaz went and met the head of Germany or US. that shows what pakistan is - the country that belongs to the army. there is no hope for this country

What and when ISI is going to play a role in resolution of internal conflicts in the country, because Pakistan can not fight external dangers till internal conflicts don't resolve.
Nawaz Sharif is attacking Waziristan because he is getting paid handsomely by US , what incentive / pressure he has to resolve internal conflicts.

@T. M. Reddy Reddy, ready to hear this: in democracies the intelligence chief's boss is the PM or the president. Therefore, the former reports and meets his supervisor regularly. If you did not know that, ask for more political science courses--independent of Indian bias--maybe will be more educated. For your information: Mr. Obama meets his intelligence almost daily.

Did PM Nawaz go to meet the ISI chief or was it the other way around. That will show who is the boss. The article does not say and that means the PM went to meet the ISI Chief. What a democracy Pakistan is?
