MULTAN: A female patient was allegedly gang raped at a hospital in Burewala by staffers on Wednesday night.

According to media reports, the victim reached at the hospital to visit a doctor and was asked to wait as no doctor was available at the time.

Later she was injected with intoxicating drugs before being reportedly gang raped by five employees of the hospital.

The alleged rapists fled away when her husband reached the hospital where her condition had begun to deteriorate.

Subsequently, a case was registered in this regard at the Model Town police station in Burewala.

Police began conducting raids to carry out arrests but have remained unsuccessful so far.

Abdul Rehman, husband of the victim, said Punjab Chief Minister Mian Shahbaz Sharif should ensure the arrest of culprits and bring them to justice.

Rehman said he had left his wife at the hospital to bring his children from home and by the time he returned, she had been subjected to rape.

What is happening in this country. One is not safe even in hospitals. It's a shame and alarming failure of the Hospital mangement and authorities that people are left at the mercy of such hooligans. Where are the CCTV camera footages. Heads should roll for this gross negligence and incomptenence and the culprits should be apprehended and given exemplary punishment. Even Capital Punishment is too less for this dastardly act. My sympathies to the family concerned, but they should not rest until the perpetrators are brought to justice. Civil Society too has to play it's role in ensuring justice is served with full force and severity.

The only thing(s) ...repeat the only thing(s) Shahbaz Sharif saheb is known to be able to do are two (1) Order an inquiry into the incident and (2) In some cases go and visit the victim. And then what ? Then forget for ever...because over the years there are no reports which suggest that he took any...any action against the culprits. the so-called inquiry reports are seldom made public. As regards the police in many cases they will not be able to make arrests and even if otherwise the inquiry officer will try best to save the culprits from any kind of punishment. This is the history of our rulers and the police.

Unless the culprits apprehended, tried in a summary court on daily hearing basis, and once proved guilty, are hanged publicly, I foresee no let up in crimes against women. Unfortunately, both the major political parties in Pakistan are dominated by criminals and for this reason alone, both have abolished death penalty merely to save their own skin.

Routine statements like so and so has taken notice of the incident or has instructed the police to nab the culprits within 24 or 48 hours or has vowed not to rest till the culprits are brought to justice etc. always follow such grave happenings. Then its back to normal. Media has a role to play by keeping the issue alive and reminding the government of its pious statements regarding the matter. I propose that a separate space be reserved in the newspaper for listing cases where the government fails to administer justice for whatever reasons so that those in power feel ashamed and at least spare the masses of their routine pronouncements. I realize that bulk of the newspaper space would be consumed in such an exercise but the voter would exercise better judgment next time around.
