KABUL: Five Afghan men were hanged on Wednesday for the gang rape of four women despite the United Nations and human rights groups criticising the trial and calling for new president Ashraf Ghani to stay the executions.
“Five men in connection to the Paghman incident and one other big criminal were executed this afternoon,” Rahmatullah Nazari, the deputy attorney general, told AFP.
The rapes took place in Paghman, outside Kabul.
There was no immediate comment from the office of President Ashraf Ghani, who faced strong public pressure to not stay the executions after he came to power last week.
“The court's verdict has been implemented and all the convicts have been executed — five from the Paghman case, plus Habib Istalifi, who was head of a notorious kidnapping gang," the attorney general's chief of staff Atta Mohammad Noori told AFP.
The men were executed in Pul-e-Charkhi prison near Kabul.
The brutal attack in August provoked a national outcry with many Afghans demanding the men be hanged, and then-president Hamid Karzai signed their death sentences shortly before leaving office.

UN, Amnesty International and similar organizations are actually the protectors and abettors of criminals be it individuals or nations. They do nothing for the oppressed and the victims but always come forward to protect the oppressors, rapists and murderers on one pretext or the other. I am glad that Afghan government carried out the executions.

I wonder what type of punishment the UN, Human Rights Groups and International Amnesty people propose for such criminals? What about the rights of women who are raped? What punishment will bring closer for them or would they have to live with that nightmare all their lives?

@GR I do not think it has spread out of India, it just so happened that it came to prominence because the victims came forward instead of suffering the rest of their lives out of fear or shame.

This is the only punishment that would deter these men who think of women as chattel. Totally agree with the punishment as long as the accused were given an honest trial and found guilty.

@ashraf Shame ...a million shame for sure. And more shame on our leaders who have stayed the executions of even mass murderers in Pakistan under pressure. Should not they learn any lessen and take heart from the newly elected Afghan president who did not take the pressure to stay the executions.

IF these men were tried, the matter investigated and found guilty by an objective process , it IS a fitting punishment. It is encouraging to see that such actions have been taken decisively by the Afghanistani authorities. It hopefully will create a strong detterent and send out a clear message both at home and abroad that a crime like rape is going to be taken seriously by a Muslim country and not go unpunished. Pakistan judiciary and law enforcement take note and provide justice for Mukhtaran Mai .You have put this country to shame when it comes to protecting women and giving them relief.
