MOGADISHU: A Somali woman has been stoned to death in the Shebab-controlled part of the country for secretly marrying several husbands, officials and witnesses said Saturday.
Witnesses said the woman was buried up to her neck and pelted with rocks and stones by hooded men in front of a large crowd in the southern coastal district of Barawe.
“The woman married four husbands and confessed to the crime. I questioned her several times while she was in prison and she told me she was mentally fit. All the four husbands were questioned and they have confirmed that they had married her,” Islamic court judge Sheik Mohamud Abu Abdullah told the gathering.
The woman, 33-year-old Safiyo Ahmed Jumale, was executed on Friday in front of dozens of onlookers.
“The woman was brought with her eyes covered and she was buried up to her neck before she was stoned to death by hooded men,” said Ali Yare, a resident who witnessed the execution.
Somalia's Al Qaeda-affiliated Shebab control large swathes of territory in the south and centre of the war-torn country, where they impose a strict interpretation of Islamic law.

If woman has more than one husband, unfortunately one the tribe in Hemachal Pardesh, they have this custom, who would claim that the real father of the child? Would you tolerate if your wife marries to another man. Also, please note that there have always women have more population than men, so, if there are 40 men and 60 men, where would 10 women would go? Either do corruption or legally marry to a person who is already married. You cannot understand decisions made by the Almighty Allah.

@Krishan Our religion does not allow men to have four wives. It did for a limited period and for a specific reason. Those two conditions exist no more but a bunch of dim witted, religious fanatics want to hold on to this archaic law which was enacted about 1500 years ago and is no more valid as the conditions under which it was proclaimed, were specific to that time.

@sameer Please check your facts. The ratio of males to females is higher in all muslim countries, China and India. Then in your logic females should be able to have more than one husband. Modern DNA tests can prove who the real father of a child is. All western countries including USA, Canada and Australia have more females to males

@qazi, the difference is raja Dashrat lived 3000 years ago. Hinduism has moved on. Neither the religion nor the Hindu Law in modern day India approve of or accept polygamy.

There should be gender equality in law. If a man keeping four wives is considered okay, then a woman marrying four times should be okay. Period.
Stoning to death cannot be condoned as religious sanctioned behaviour. If Muslims have adopted, electricity, cars, medicines of 21st century, then they should adopt the humane laws which run the world in this century

Salam. I would have thought this was barbaric too. Islam only allows for this a punishment when the woman her self confesses over and over. Even then multiple questions are asked to check her psychological state. Notice the article, this is indicated. This woman was most likely also asked "you will be stoned to death because of your confession, do you have any doubt about what you confess", and after she only confirmed this would have been processed. Torture or anything to extract a confession out in such a case is not permitted. This woman had the option to go back on her word to save her life until her last breath.

While some says yes & some says no to a women marrying & keeping multiple husbands at the same time, my question is if a child is born out of this women who will be the legal & real father of this baby. What about the inheritance issues etc. I think for a women to have multiple husbands at any given time will raise many non solvable problems & lead to serious in-fights.

@sameer That's the same hogwash polygamy supporters spew out. There are NOT more women than men, in fact, quite the opposite in many parts of the world, including Southeast Asia, so using your logic, women ought to marry more than one man right?
Furthermore, there's a simple way to find out who the father is using this newfangled technology called a paternity test.
Lastly, you say no man would tolerate his wife being married to another? What on earth makes you think a woman can tolerate her husband being married to another woman? You clearly don't know very much about women if you can find a justification for that. Let me offer an explanation....I'm a woman and I would never, ever, not for a second, in any world, on any planet in any galaxy tolerate my future partner being married to another. Quite simple. If one expects monogamy he/she better be willing to offer the same. Cheers.
