Making the most of school

Published September 27, 2014

STARTING a new school year is like turning the page of a new book you have started reading. You know there are going to be so many experiences and moments that will engulf you in the coming pages, however, you still reside amidst the whiffs of suspense and expectations.

Just as is the case with a book, that you cannot completely take in the effect the author is trying to create with his words without creating a cosy reading environment, you really should not and cannot make the most of a school term without setting some goals. If you are all ready to enjoy your time at school, you will, and if you are not prepared, you will neither do well nor like the experience.

Here are some things to keep in mind and some goals you should set, in order to make the most of your time in school.

Expand your social circle

ONE of the most vital things for a depression-free life is having friends – people to share your secrets with, and laugh and cry with, as the lives meanders down the plains of fate.

Try to expand your friends’ circle. If there are in the school/class welcome them, help them out in adjusting to new the environment and be a support for them when they are in distress.

Make yourself friendly and approachable. Even teachers like those students who work well with others and in teams, and in turn experience the joy of being popular with both students and teachers.

Finding your real self

WHAT many students fail to notice throughout their school life is the countless opportunities each day brings. Not many students take part in extracurricular activities believing that only homework and performing well in their tests are their savior. Of course they are extremely vital but school is not just about breezing through the exams. It’s time to discover what talents you have. So be it the morning assembly presentation or other activities, blend yourself in them. This year, take part in the challenging competitions and break the barriers of shyness!

Turn lemons into lemonade

WHETHER you are finding a particular subject difficult, or are being bullied by senior students; whether someone from your class is making your life miserable or a newcomer is proving to be an emerging opponent – you should learn that it’s time to tackle these problems practically.

School is a perfect teaser of the way life’s problems trouble mankind, and the best way to get ready for later life is to deal with these issues. Try to work a successful way out of a problem rather than running away and getting nightmares. Believe me, once you are able to overcome the hurdles and triumph, you shall get a sense of happiness that will be very satisfying.

Make new habits

WAS the curtain of your previous year eaten up by the moths of non-punctuality, disturbed sleep routines and procrastination (the habit of delaying things)? If yes, then it’s time to invest in mothballs!

Try creating the good habit of sleeping early and waking up early for it’s the key to solving many problems. This year, be proactive and reminisce over all those bad memories you have achieved due to your bad habit of delaying things. Stop waiting for deadlines and complete your assignments earlier in order to avoid last minute rush and eventual embarrassments. Everyone love students who are responsible. And we all wish to be loved, don’t we?

Think outside the box

THIS year allow creativity to take hold of your imagination’s reign by thinking outside the box. And what exactly will help you to think productively? The only solution is to spend less time on television and gadgets, and to incorporate more reading. Not only just reading, take out some time and go for a short walk, visit a park often or take up painting as a hobby because experts have proven such activities to be mind-boasters which hone your thinking skills. And once you are able to think about things with a new perspective, you will see wonders taking place around you.

Praying

PRAYING is not only a way of offering thanks to your Lord for all His Blessings but it also helps to set your troubled mind at ease. And you can only perform better once you are at peace internally. So what else can be better meditation than the five daily prayers themselves?

There can be so many other goals which one can start working on to make sure school is a pleasure not a pain and success meets you at every step of the way. However, the most important thing is to follow the set goals and to keep following them diligently, even if things appear a bit troublesome in the beginning. Don’t lose hope if they are failing to provide you with the outcomes you expected.

Just remain steadfast and you will see the magic they’ll do. For it takes many months before a tree is fully grown, but once it does, you cannot count the fruits it bears! Have a safe year ahead!

Tips to become a successful student

Eat breakfast and lunch

ALWAYS eat your breakfast. It’s important to jump start your metabolism the right way so it’s running smoothly throughout the day. Lunch is also important to stop your stomach from grumbling till dinner time. A full stomach keeps you focused. Skipping meals actually only slows down your metabolism and makes you gain more weight.

Get enough sleep

SLEEP has so many benefits. Try to get things done and out of the way so that you get your much needed shuteye. You’ll be much more likely to pay attention in your classes if you have slept well the night before; also, if you can avail an afternoon nap, it will works wonders to keep you active in the later part of the day.

Weekends are for fun

AFTER five days of school and a tough routine, it’s time to go out with friends or family and have a great weekend. But remember, school is your top priority if you have loads of homework this weekend, you have to sacrifice your day out.

Keep your attendance up

YOUR attendance is important at school. If you don’t go to school, your grades will obviously drop fast because you will have gaps in your learning that are difficult to backfill. If you have a genuine illness or other issue preventing you from attending school, have a parent, guardian or friend talk to your teachers about doing catch-up work from home.

Listening and participating in the class

LISTENING to your teacher is very important and if you notice most of the questions in your test papers are from the lectures explained in class. So the key is to be actively present and listening to the teacher’s explanations. While your participation in the class will not only make you an apple of your teacher’s eye but will also make you confident and genius among other students.

Good luck with your school and grades!
