ISLAMABAD: Retired justice Riaz Kayani, member of the election commission from Punjab, on Wednesday served a legal notice worth Rs20 million to Afzal Khan, the former Additional Secretary of the ECP.

It was demanded through the legal notice that Afzal Khan apologise regarding statements against Kayani within the next fourteen days.

According to the notice, if the former additional secretary did not apologise for his act of defaming a serving member of the ECP, then Kayani reserves the right to proceed with civil or criminal lawsuits against Afzal Khan.

Kayani has taken a stance in the notice that Afzal Khan leveled baseless allegations against him in a TV program which damaged his reputation in this regard.

Afzal Khan appeared on the program where he alleged that the general elections were ‘massively rigged’ and called former chief justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry and Kayani as the primary culprits.

He alleged that the chief justice had interfered in the ECP’s mandate by appointing returning officers (ROs), and covered up his role by influencing the Chief Election Commissioner, retired Justice Fakharuddin G. Ebrahim.

Kayani has said that Afzal was disgruntled because he had been refused an extension of service, and was making ‘outlandish’ claims to get back at him.
