Three govt hospitals to change hands

KARACHI: The Sindh government on Friday decided to hand over public sector hospitals management to the private institutions enjoying reputation of delivering quality medical care and services to the people.

The decision was taken by the Sindh Health Advisory Board that met in the chamber of the provincial minister for parliamentary affairs Dr Sikandar Mandhro who is also chairman of the board.

Besides members of the board and health secretary Dr Iqbal Hussain Durrani, the meeting was also attended by representatives of Indus Hospital and Bahria Foundation.

In the first phase, the management of three public sector hospitals — Lyari General Hospital, Civil Hospital Hyderabad and District Headquarters Hospital of Badin — would be transferred to the private sector entities to ensure proper use of funds. The move was aimed at improving health care services to the people visiting public sector hospitals.

According to Dr Mandhro, the private sector management would be allowed to use funds allocated in annual budget while the private sector would arrange services of doctors, medical staff, medicines and additional required financial assistance and services of additional manpower, if required.

Besides medical experts, public representatives and philanthropists would be nominated on its board of advisory,the minister said.
